The Calcutta High Court has made a significant ruling in the Sandeshkhali case, ordering a court-monitored investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on April 10. The case involves allegations of sexual atrocities and land grabs by local leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress in the Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal.
In its verdict on Wednesday, the High Court directed the CBI to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and submit a comprehensive report. Specifically, the investigation will focus on allegations of sexual violence against women and illegal land conversion for pisciculture. This move comes in the wake of previous investigations, including an inquiry into the attack on Enforcement Directorate officials, being handed over to the CBI.
The High Court emphasised the importance of an impartial investigation, given the complexity of the issues involved in the Sandeshkhali case. It called for the state to provide full support to the investigating agency and instructed the District Magistrate to launch a portal/email ID to receive complaints related to the case.
Moreover, the court ordered the installation of CCTV cameras and LED street lights in the area on a priority basis within 15 days. It also mandated that the necessary funds for these installations be provided by the state government.
The ruling comes amidst heightened tensions in Sandeshkhali following the attack on a team of Enforcement Directorate officers during a raid at the residence of suspended Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan. Shahjahan, a key accused in the sexual assault and land grab charges in the area, was arrested by the Bengal Police in connection with the assault on Enforcement Directorate officials.

Allegations of sexual violence against women and land grabs by local Trinamool Congress leaders have been a cause for concern in Sandeshkhali, located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The court’s decision to initiate a CBI investigation underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for swift and thorough action to address the allegations.
The High Court has set a date for the next hearing on May 2, indicating its commitment to closely monitoring the progress of the investigation. With the CBI now tasked with probing the matter, there is hope for justice to be served and for accountability to be upheld in the Sandeshkhali case.
