When Nehru used IB to win election against Ram Manohar Lohia

A tale from the annals of history emerges, shedding light on the nexus between Bollywood and electoral politics. The protagonist of this narrative is none other than Jawaharlal Nehru, the stalwart of Indian democracy, who, it appears, was not immune to the allure of mingling showbiz with governance

These days there is an uproar regarding Kangana Ranaut’s candidature. The alliance of Congress, Leftists and religious fundamentalists are posting objectionable posts on Kangana, while the intellectuals of Lutyens Gang are raising questions as to why Bollywood stars are being used in electoral politics. But this lustful gang does not know that the real creator of this “cocktail” of Bollywood and politics is their great father, the messiah of democracy, the guardian of secularism Jawaharlal Nehru. Let us look into the window of history and see the truth.

So this is from 1962. The third general election was taking place in the country. The victory of Nehru and Congress was certain but even after this Nehru was having sleepless nights. And the reason for this was the Lok Sabha seat of North Mumbai. From where Nehru’s best friend and the most useless Defense Minister in the history of India, V.K. Menon was contesting the elections. In fact, at that time there was an atmosphere of anger in the entire country regarding Defense Minister Menon. Although China attacked India in October 1962, China had already started infiltrating the Indian border. Menon, a staunch supporter of leftist ideology, was completely failing to confront China. But even after this Nehru not only supported his friend V.K. Menon was retained in the cabinet and even made him the Congress candidate from North Mumbai in the 1962 elections.

Independence hero Acharya Kripalani became very angry with this action of Nehru. Former Congress President Acharya Kripalani had by then formed his own separate party, Praja Socialist Party. Gandhian Kripalani left his seat of Sitamarhi in Bihar, which was considered safe, and announced to contest elections against Defense Minister Menon in Mumbai. Kripalani felt that he would save the country from the crisis of China by defeating Menon in the elections, but Prime Minister Nehru had already made a strategic plan to save Menon. He made the then super star Yusuf Khan alias Dilip Kumar a pawn… Dilip Kumar was a very special assistant of Nehru and one day in this election environment, Prime Minister Nehru called Dilip Kumar. The conversation that took place between the two on the phone has been described by Dilip Kumar himself in his autobiography “The Substance and the Shadow”. This book has been published in Hindi and Urdu under the name of “Vajud aur Parchhai”. Dilip Kumar has written on page number 240 of this book that –

“Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru himself called me and said – ‘Can I spare time and go to the Congress office in Bombay and meet V.K. Menon? Menon is contesting elections from North Bombay and a big leader is against him. J.B. Kripalani is standing in the election. I respected Pandit Nehru’s words because after Agaji, I had the most respect and honor for him. And as he had ordered, I reached the Congress office in Juhu to meet Menon.”

Why did Dilip Kumar accept Nehru’s advice??? Actually there was a big reason behind this. Dilip Kumar was buried under the burden of Nehru’s favors. A year ago i.e. in 1961, Dilip Kumar’s film “Ganga-Jamuna” was about to be released, which was produced and directed by Dilip Kumar. There were a lot of violence scenes in this film, hence the Censor Board did not pass it. Troubled by this, Dilip Kumar had sought help from Prime Minister Nehru. Dilip Kumar himself has mentioned this sentence on page number 242 of his autobiography “Vajud aur Parchhai”, he writes that –

“The Censor Board had done injustice to me by not giving certificate to my film ‘Ganga-Jamuna’. Whereas in the same week it had given certificate to Raj Kapoor’s film ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’ even though it also had scenes of violence. Then I decided to meet Pandit Nehru and presented my case before him. Impressed by my appeal, Pandit Nehru again ordered the review of ‘Ganga-Jamuna’ and the Censor Board passed the film.”

So you read that the messiah of democracy, Pandit Nehru used to interfere in the work of the Film Censor Board also!!! Well, it is clear from these things that Dilip Kumar was somewhere buried under the favors of Nehru and on the other hand, Nehru also knew how to recover the price of the favors done. So Nehru collected the price from Dilip Kumar and gave him V.K. Sent to meet Menon. What happened when Dilip Kumar reached the Congress office has been described by Dilip Kumar himself in his autobiography “Vajud aur Parchhai”. He writes that –

“In this meeting, VK Menon told me that the competition was tough, he wanted me to hold a rally for him. When I reached for the first rally, the joyous and enthusiastic screams of the crowd were clearly audible. I Took a deep breath and spoke for 10 minutes. When my speech ended, the sound of applause was deafening. Thus I gave many speeches while campaigning for Menon. Later campaigning for Congress was one of my It became a routine task because Krishna Menon had won the election.”

That is, friends… Nehru made the ‘hero’ Dilip Kumar a pawn and sacrificed a ‘saint’ of politics, Acharya Kripalani, for the ‘villain’ Menon… In 1962, thanks to Dilip Kumar, Nehru’s friend Defense Minister V. Of. Menon won but not only did democracy lose but the country also lost… Yes, the country lost… Just eight months after these election results, China attacked India, defeated us and killed thousands of our people. Kilometers of land snatched away. And all this happened because of the incompetent pair of Nehru and Menon.

It is also important to mention here that in the 1962 elections, Nehru had also sacrificed the real “hero” of politics, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, by using another film hero Balraj Sahni. In those elections, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also making strong attacks against Nehru’s China policy and especially against Menon. To defeat Atal ji from Balrampur, Nehru sent Balraj Sahni to campaign there for two days. The result was that because of Balraj Sahani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee lost by only 2052 votes, but this small margin of defeat later became a tradition in Indian politics. You people should know that whether it is Dilip Kumar or Balraj Sahani, the first use of film stars in elections was by the protector of democracy, Chacha Nehru.

So it is the year 1962… Third general elections were being held in the country… Nehru was contesting from Phulpur near Allahabad… Last two times he had won the elections easily from here but this time he was going to get There was a tough competition… because Samajwadi leader Ram Manohar Lohia from Phulpur had decided to challenge him…

Troubled by this, Nehru recalled his closest intelligence officer B.N. Malik, who was considered the greatest spy of the country at that time and used to be the Chief of IB. Keep in mind that till then RAW and CBI had not been formed, and the responsibility of IB was to collect internal and external intelligence information of the country. Although, it is unethical to use government agencies in elections, but uncle Nehru, the master of democracy, was forgiven for everything.

At the behest of Nehru, IB Chief B.N. Malik prepared an intelligence report of the electoral equation of Phulpur parliamentary constituency and handed it over directly to N.K., Nehru’s personal assistant posted in the PMO. To Seshan (Nehru considered Nehru like his son and was working with him like a shadow since 1943, Seshan later also worked with Indira and Rajiv Gandhi)…

Well now let us read that in this report of January 25, 1962, just before the general elections, IB Chief B.N. What information did Malik give to PM Nehru about Phulpur seat… It was written in this report –

The main figure in opposition to the Prime Minister in Phulpur constituency is Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia. Dr. Lohia has been assured of full support from Bharatiya Jana Sangh (*present BJP). Moreover, Prabhu Dutt Brahmachari, who had contested from this seat in the last general election but lost, has assured full support to Dr. Lohia. He has promised to use “kirtan” and religious approach to win over Lohia. The combined efforts of the Socialist Party, Bharatiya Jan Sangh and Prabhudutt Brahmachari are creating a good support for Dr. Lohia.

However, Mohan Lal Kher, the local representative of the Fearless Youth Movement, who has been campaigning against the Prime Minister for the last several months, is out of the picture. However, Dr. Lohia has been assured financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh from an unknown source. It is quite possible that the financier of the Fearless Youth Movement may have tricked the local representative and contacted Dr. Lohia directly.
(Note by BN Mullik, Director IB)

Note – This complete note/letter/report has been published in Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru. Series 2 | Vol. In 74, which has been considered the primary source of everything done in Nehru’s life.
