Supreme Court Rejects Plea for Postponement of NEET MDS 2024
Earlier this year, students and professionals in the medical field petitioned the Supreme Court for postponement of NEET MDS, similar to how the NEET PG was postponed. In the first hearing, Supreme Court refused to push the dates. Know Complete Details
The students appealed for a postponement again after they received an extension for the internship cut-off from National Dental Commission (NDC), stating that over 8000 candidates had been found ineligible for NEET MDS 2024, and extending the exam date may help these candidates resolve their eligibility issue.
The associations that supported the students for the postponement, including FORDA, argued that the cut-off date for the internship means that students will have to wait for the NEET PG to end in August 2024, which is longer than their usual time frame. They also stated that students’ confusion around the test might make their performance dwindle in the test.
However, in a session held on March 15, 2024, the Supreme Court refused to postpone the NEET MDS. The Chief Justice of India (CJI), D Y Chandrachud, disagreed with the statement made for parity between NEET PG and NEET MDS and stated that the exam fell under the policy domain of NDC. He stated that the parameters for postponement were not appropriate for judicial review.
During the ruling, CJI DY Chandrachud said, “An effort is made by NDC to bring back on rails the commencement of dental courses. This cannot be regarded as arbitrary to seek the intervention of the court…on the parameters of judicial review, we think it is inappropriate to interfere at this stage. We decline to intervene in the matter”. He added that postponing the NEET MDS this close to the original date will affect the students. (With inputs from CollegeDunia)
