The much awaited trailer for the Adah Sharma starrer “Bastar: The Naxal Story” was unveiled on Tuesday, March 5. The trailer for the movie has created ripples across the audience with its hard hitting dialogue and promising portrayal of characters while unravelling the chilling truth about the insurgency.

The two-and-a-half minute trailer unveiled by the makers on Tuesday’s afternoon begins while claiming that the Maoist group active across the Indian States is the third-most dangerous terror outfit in the world. The trailer further presents a cinematic representation of a real life incident of Bastar in which as many as 76 jawans of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed by the Maoists at Tadmetala village of Chhattisgarh in 2010.

Further, the trailer of the film highlights the violence unleashed by the Maoists in the remote terrain of Bastar, the southernmost division of the State of Chhattisgarh, while revealing the nexus between the urban handlers of the Maoists and those who indulged in guerilla warfare against the security forces in forest regions. The trailer also talks about the forced recruitment of the guerilla fighters from the remote villages of Chhattisgarh.

Further, it has been claimed by the makers, that more personnel have so far perished in the ongoing war against the Maoists than in the wars fought by the country against Pakistan. The trailer has also revealed glimpses of the brutalities unleashed by the extremists against innocent civilians residing in the regions infested by insurgency.

The film, which identified the lead actress Adah Sharma as an IPS officer stationed in the Maoist affected Bastar region, has led to the reunion of the actress with producer Vipul Amrutal Shah and director Sudipto Sen all part of the crew of ‘The Kerala Story’ movie,  which performed exceptionally well despite backlash by certain groups.

The trailer of the film, which is all set to hit theatres on  March 15 has received positive reactions from netizens who are all praised to the makers for showing courage to make a film on the burning issue of Maoist insurgency.

Left-wing Extremism

It must be noted that the security forces have been engaged in a long battle with the Maoists across separate states of Bharat infested by the insurgency. According to the statistics provided by the government, a total of 8625 civilians have been killed in the ongoing battle between security personnel and the Maoists between 2004 to 2022.

However, the recent statistics released by the government suggest a gradual decline of the Maoist insurgency over the years. According to the statistics released by the government, the overall figures of violence unleashed by extremists have come down to 76 per cent in 2022, compared to an all-time high in 2010. Further, the number of deaths, including those of security personnel and civilians, has also reduced by 90 per cent from an all time high of 1005 in 2010 to 98 in 2022.

In terms of the geographical spread of the left wing extremists, it has now been reduced to only 176 police stations out of 45 LWE affected districts, compared to a high of 465 police stations of 96 district in 2010. In all an overall dip of 52 per cent  in Maoist violence, 69 per cent in causalities related to LWE and a significant drop of 71 per cent has been noticed in number of lives lost of security personnel in encounters with the Maoists.
