Guwahati: In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken a decisive step by filing a charge sheet on March 2 in connection with the Bishnupur armoury loot case. This crucial update comes from the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Kamrup (Metro), Guwahati, Assam, as reported by credible CBI sources.

The accused individuals identified in the charge sheet include Laishram Prem Singh, Khumukcham Dhiren alias Thapkpa, Moirangthem Anand Singh, Athokpam Kajit alias Kishorjit, Loukrakpam Michael Mangangcha alias Michael, Konthoujam Romojit Meitei alias Romojit, and Keisham Johnson alias Johnson.

The case revolves around a harrowing incident that unfolded on August 3 last year. During this event, a mob perpetrated a bold heist, making off with over 300 weapons, 19,800 rounds of ammunition, and various accessories from two rooms at the 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion headquarters in Naranseina, Bishnupur.

This brazen act took place amidst heightened tensions, as the mob assembled to march towards Churachandpur, where the Kuki groups organised  a mass burial for those who lost their lives during the ethnic clashes in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Later the case was transferred to CBI for proper investigation. It should be mentioned that several thousands of arms and ammunition were looted by violent mob both in Imphal valley and hill districts during the initial stage of unrest in the state. Security forces launched massive search operations and recovering huge numbers of those armoury on a regular basis. But still hundreds of weapons are with civilians in the state which causes a matter of security concern for the authority.

The CBI’s swift action in filing the charge sheet underscores its commitment to addressing criminal activities and upholding justice.
