Assam’s economic landscape is on the brink of transformation with the approval of a historic Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor plant by the Union Cabinet. Spearheaded by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT), this investment marks a pivotal moment in the region’s industrial trajectory. The establishment of cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Morigaon district, Assam, signifies a paradigm shift towards technological advancement and self-reliance in semiconductor production.

Acknowledging the significance of this initiative, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the efforts of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in securing this landmark investment. Expressing gratitude to Ratan Tata, Tata Group Chairman N Chandrashekharan, and Union MoS for Electronics and Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Sarma emphasised the transformative potential of the semiconductor plant.

The CM’s optimism about the plant catalysing an Industry 4.0 revolution underscores the ripple effect it is expected to generate across the entire North East region. As construction commences within the next 100 days, the stage is set for Assam to emerge as a hub of technological innovation and economic prosperity. Today’s decision not only signifies a historic milestone but also heralds a new era of opportunity and growth for the people of Assam.

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet has given the green light for the establishment of three semiconductor units, marking a crucial step in the ‘Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India’ initiative. This significant decision reflects the government’s commitment to indigenous semiconductor production, aiming for self-reliance and bolstering the nation’s technological prowess.

Revolutionizing Assam’s Landscape: TSAT’s Cutting-Edge Semiconductor Facility

Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (“TSAT”) is poised to revolutionize semiconductor manufacturing with its upcoming facility in Morigaon, Assam, backed by an unprecedented investment of Rs. 27,000 crore. TSAT’s ambition extends beyond mere production; it aims to establish a cutting-edge semiconductor unit that will redefine India’s technological capabilities.

 Indigenous Innovation: Advanced Packaging Technologies in Assam

At the core of TSAT’s initiative lies a firm commitment to indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies. By pioneering methodologies such as flip chip and ISIP (integrated system in package) technologies, the facility showcases India’s prowess in semiconductor innovation and manufacturing, positioning Assam as a center for indigenous technological advancements.

TSAT’s strategic decision to anchor its semiconductor unit in Assam underscores the region’s untapped potential. Advancing India’s Technological Ambitions: The Comprehensive Programme

On December 21, 2021, the Indian government announced the Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India, with a substantial outlay of Rs. 76,000 crore. This initiative underscores India’s ambition to strengthen its semiconductor and display manufacturing capabilities. The investment not only enhances technological prowess but also fosters a robust ecosystem for semiconductor and display production, strategically positioning India in the global tech landscape.

Semiconductor Revolution in Gujarat: Micron’s Stride in Sanand

In June 2023, the Union Cabinet approved Micron’s proposal to establish a cutting-edge semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat. The ongoing construction of this facility signals a promising future for India’s semiconductor industry. It represents a significant stride in bolstering the country’s technological infrastructure and fostering innovation in the semiconductor sector. The strategic location in Sanand is poised to catalyze the emergence of a robust semiconductor ecosystem, attracting investments, talent, and fostering collaborations within the region.

Strategic Collaboration for Gujarat’s Growth: TEPL and PSMC’s Partnership

Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) has forged a strategic alliance with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) from Taiwan to establish a cutting-edge semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat. This collaboration, with an investment of Rs. 91,000 crore, emphasizes the commitment to advancing India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Leveraging PSMC’s expertise, the partnership aims to establish a robust semiconductor ecosystem within India.

By harnessing the synergies between TEPL’s vision, PSMC’s technical prowess, and the supportive ecosystem provided by Dholera, the semiconductor fab endeavors to catalyze India’s journey towards becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing powerhouse.
