Guwahati: In a landmark decision, Monirul Islam, also known as Raju, a resident of Chatapara village in Dhubri district of Assam, has been found guilty of raping a twelve-year-old girl. The Court of Additional Sessions Judge cum Special Judge, POCSO, Bilasipara, sentenced the convict to 21 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on February 22, 2024.

The Special Judge, Mukul Chetia, determined that Monirul Islam violated multiple provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The verdict outlines a severe penalty involving imprisonment for various durations and financial penalties.

Monirul Islam’s conviction under Section 6 of the POCSO Act led to a 21-year prison term and a fine of Rs. 10,000, as detailed in the judgement witnessed by ten individuals in the court.

The case, initiated by a complaint filed on October 17, 2019, detailed how Monirul Islam forcefully raped a twelve-year-old girl. The complainant approached the Officer-in-charge of Bilasipara police station, leading to the registration of Case No. 1107/19 under various sections of the IPC against Monirul Islam.

The court’s decision on February 22, 2024, based on the case diary and statements recorded, underscores the gravity of Monirul Islam’s crime. This verdict represents a significant stride towards justice for the victim, emphasising society’s intolerance for crimes against minors. The stringent punishment serves as a clear message that such offences will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, Tapan Kumar Bhattacharjee, the additional Public Prosecutor, POCSO, highlighted during the proceedings that the complainant’s twelve-year-old daughter was forcibly raped by Monirul Islam. The meticulous presentation of the case’s material, coupled with the court’s careful consideration, reveals the commitment to ensuring justice in cases of heinous crimes against children. The conviction and sentencing of Monirul Islam serve as a crucial deterrent, aiming to protect the vulnerable and send a resounding message against such reprehensible acts.
