Guwahati: In a recent encounter in Lumding, Hojai district of Assam, notorious drug mafia Abdul Ali, also known as Abul Hussain, sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg as he attempted to attack the police on February 22. The incident unfolded during a search operation conducted by a Lumding police team led by Pallav Tamuli, Additional SP (Crime), who had apprehended Abul Ali on January 21. Under the cover of darkness on January 22, Abdul Ali assaulted a police constable in an attempt to evade arrest when he was taken for a search operation.
The police were compelled to open fire to thwart his escape, resulting in Abul Ali’s critical condition and subsequent admission to Lumding Civil Hospital. Additionally, a police officer was injured during the confrontation with the drug mafia.
This wasn’t Abdul Ali’s first encounter with the law, as he had previously been arrested for similar crimes, and served a three-month jail term. However, upon release on bail, he resumed his involvement in drug smuggling, leading to the recent confrontation with authorities.
Meanwhile, in South Salmara Mankachar district, a 26-year-old named Sahinur Islam, engaged in cow smuggling, met his demise during a clash with Border Security Force (BSF) officers on the Indo-Bangladesh border. The incident occurred during a routine patrol aimed at curbing illicit activities in the region.
Sahinur, a resident of Kukurmara village in South Salmara Mankachar district, resisted the BSF’s attempt to halt a group involved in cross-border cattle movement. The confrontation escalated, prompting the BSF officers to use gunfire in self-defense. The clash unfolded during the night in Kukurmara, leading to Sahinur sustaining fatal injuries. The border area between India and Bangladesh witnessed heightened tension following the incident.
Illegal cow smuggling remains a persistent challenge along the Indo-Bangladesh border, and security teams diligently work to combat such activities. The recent clash underscores the arduous tasks undertaken by law enforcement to ensure border security and curb illegal practices in the region.
