In a keynote address at the Bharat Muni Samman function during the All India Kala Sadhak Sangam organised by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) affiliate Sanskar Bharati, RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat emphasised the need for vigilance against attempts to alter the cultural fabric of society under the guise of art. Acknowledging the evolving dynamics of India’s cultural landscape, Dr Bhagwat urged Sanskar Bharati to remain prepared to safeguard the rich heritage and values that define the nation.

Dr Bhagwat articulated that India, after decades of independence, is in the process of rediscovering its self-respect. He underscored the pivotal role that cultural institutions like Sanskar Bharati play in preserving and promoting the ethos that define the Indian way of life. The Sangh Sarsanghchalak reflected on the transformative power of art, stating that it has been historically employed to both gain popularity and, at times, alter societal norms.

Expressing concern, Dr Bhagwat remarked, “Sometimes art is also used to spread bad culture.” He cautioned Sanskar Bharati to be vigilant and prepared to counter such attempts. Bhagwat urged the organisation to cultivate a cadre of artists dedicated to the development and preservation of India’s culture. He emphasised the importance of having a group of artists capable of guiding global cultural discourse.

In his address, Dr Bhagwat prophesied that the nation is on the brink of rising and establishing its unique identity. He attributed this resurgence to the recent construction of the Ram Lalla Mandir in Ayodhya, asserting that the arrival of Bhagwan Sri Ram has marked the return of India’s intrinsic self. Dr Bhagwat also alleged that previous Governments had neglected the essence of Indianness.

Highlighting the role of Sanskar Bharati in shaping the cultural narrative, Bhagwat urged the organisation to be proactive in countering any attempts to distort or dilute India’s cultural identity. He stressed the need for a collective effort by artists associated with Sanskar Bharati to serve as custodians of the nation’s cultural legacy.

The RSS Sarsanghchalak’s remarks come at a time when discussions surrounding cultural identity and preservation have gained prominence in the national discourse. The caution against the potential misuse of art to manipulate societal norms underscores the importance the RSS places on cultural continuity and the role of organisations like Sanskar Bharati in safeguarding these values.

As India navigates the complexities of a changing world, the call to protect and promote its cultural heritage becomes increasingly pertinent. Dr Bhagwat’s address serves as a rallying cry for cultural organisations and artists to play an active role in shaping the narrative of a resurgent India that is proud of its identity and heritage.
