Bihar: Santosh Kumar murdered months after marrying Mosrat Khatun in temple; all accused absconding alongwith Mosrat

Santosh had been romantically involved with Mosrat Khatoon, the 20-year-old daughter of Shaukat Ali from Pokhara village, for the past three years. Mosrat had fled Vaishali three months ago and married Santosh in Delhi, adhering to Hindu customs, and later registering their marriage in court

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the culmination of an interfaith relationship has resulted in the death of a Hindu individual. Santosh Kumar, a resident of Bahuar village in the Vaishali district of Bihar, had married 20-year-old Mosrat Khatun approximately three months ago in Delhi. Upon returning to his village just ten days prior, Santosh’s lifeless body was discovered hanging from a tree in the fields on January 15. His family alleges that Mosrat’s family is responsible for his death, prompting a police investigation.

The incident unfolded in Bahuar village, under the jurisdiction of the Patepur police station in Vaishali district. The discovery of Santosh’s body hanging from a mango tree in a communal area of the village prompted immediate attention. The police were swiftly on the scene, initiating a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

A video of Santosh hanging from the tree and his family profusely crying in front of him is making rounds of the internet.

Outraged by Santosh’s apparent murder, local residents took to the streets, blocking the main Patna-Samastipur road and causing a disturbance. After concerted efforts, the police managed to quell the crowd and regain control of the situation. The victim’s body was subsequently secured and sent to Hajipur Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Media reports reveal that Santosh had been romantically involved with Mosrat Khatoon, the 20-year-old daughter of Shaukat Ali from Pokhara village, for the past three years. Mosrat had fled Vaishali three months ago and married Santosh in Delhi, adhering to Hindu customs, and later registering their marriage in court. The couple also made a video and uploaded it on social media following their marriage.

Local sources indicate that their relationship developed while Santosh visited Shaukat’s house to assist with milking cows.

Mosrat’s departure led to an abduction case being filed at the Patepur police station. However, just ten days before Santosh’s demise, the couple had returned to the village after their marriage in Delhi. The police recorded Mosrat’s statement under Section 164 before the court, after which she was handed over to her relatives.

In the aftermath of the police intervention, Santosh’s lifeless body was found hanging from a tree. Saurabh Suman, the SDPO of Mahua, informed the media that a case has been registered based on the victim’s family’s statement, and an investigation is underway. The family alleges that individuals from Mosrat’s in-laws’ side are responsible for Santosh’s murder.

Upon contacting SHO Patepur Shivendra Singh on January 16, Organiser learned that an FIR (number 18/2024) had been registered against eight accused, including Mosrat’s family members. The charges, under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), were confirmed by Singh. He refrained from disclosing their names but mentioned that police teams are actively pursuing the accused, who had left the village before the discovery of Santosh’s body. Singh expressed confidence that all the accused would be apprehended soon.

On January 12, Organiser reported a case from the Bhagalpur district of Bihar where a couple who eloped in 2021 met a gruesome end, along with their two-year-old daughter, as they all were shot.

The victims, identified as Chandan Kumar, 23, and Chandni Kumari, 21, had married after eloping last year, as Chandni’s family disapproved of their relationship. The couple, along with their toddler, had visited Chandan’s ailing father before tragedy struck.
