On December 11, 2023, vigilant troops of the 49 Bn BSF, engaged in boat patrolling in the Brahmaputra River near Village 60 Bighachar, under Sukchar police station in South Salmara Mankachar of Assam, intercepted and foiled a smuggling attempt. The troops seized a substantial 12,397 kg of sugar valued at Rs 7.65 lakh, along with two engine-fitted boats intended for smuggling from India to Bangladesh. The seized items have been handed over to the nearest customs office for further legal action.

Persistent Efforts and Successes

This recent success follows a similar incident on December 8, 2023, when vigilant troops of the 49 Bn BSF, during boat patrolling in the Brahmaputra River, seized 6,468 kg of sugar worth Rs 4.66 lakh, along with two engine-fitted boats meant for smuggling into Bangladesh. The seized items, once again, were promptly handed over to the nearest customs office for further legal proceedings.

Meghalaya Frontier’s Impactful Operations

Expanding the scope of their operations, the 172 Battalion of BSF Meghalaya Frontier on December 6 intercepted a vehicle loaded with sugar worth Rs 30 lakhs (nearly 70,000 kilograms) near the Lumshnong-Sonapur bordering area. This interception in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya led to the apprehension of the vehicle’s driver, who failed to provide valid documents for the sugar consignment. The seized items and the apprehended individual were handed over to the concerned police station for further legal action.

In another operation driven by specific information, a BSF party from the 4th Battalion of BSF Meghalaya seized 14 buffaloes concealed in a jungle area near the bordering village Rongtila of West Jaintia Hills district. The intent was to smuggle these buffaloes into Bangladesh. The seized cattle were promptly handed over to the concerned police station.

BSF’s Commitment to Border Security

These successful operations underscore BSF Meghalaya’s unwavering commitment to curbing illegal activities along the borders and ensuring the safety and security of the region. The vigilant efforts of the Border Security Force continue to play a pivotal role in thwarting trans-border crimes and smuggling activities, contributing to the overall security of the Indo-Bangladesh international border. As BSF troops remain on high alert, their proactive stance reinforces the message that attempts to compromise border integrity will be met with decisive action, a statement released by the border security force stated.
