Assam envisions a paradisiacal future with a sharp decline in crime rates; CM Sarma praises uncompromising policing.

Under the stewardship of Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a remarkable downturn in crime rates was hailed as a testament to the State's robust law enforcement strategies. Himanta Sarma's resolute endorsement of strong and unwavering policing practices has emerged as the pivotal force behind the significant decline in crime incidents across Assam

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma proudly declared on December 6 that the strategic implementation of “strong and uncompromising policing” is the linchpin behind the substantial decline in crime incidents within the State. Sarma’s optimism echoed through his assertion that Assam could transform into a “paradise” within the next three years if the existing robust law and order measures persist.

The impetus for Sarma’s statement stems from the recent report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), revealing a remarkable 48.26 per cent decrease in the total number of cognisable crimes in Assam, plummeting to nearly 69,000 cases in 2022. Furthermore, Sarma highlighted that the positive trend in diminishing crime rates continues into 2023.

“Strong and uncompromising policing is the reason for this decline in crime rate; there is no alternative to strong policing. If we can maintain this robust policing for three years, Assam will be a paradise,” asserted Chief Minister Sarma. He emphasised that this marks the first instance of an overall crime reduction in Assam since 1979, underscoring the Government’s commitment to perpetuating this trend.

The latest NCRB data indicates a substantial decline in crime and showcases Assam’s remarkable ascent from 9th place in 2021 to 20th place in the number of crimes reported in India. Chief Minister Sarma expressed satisfaction with this significant improvement, hailing it as “real good news” for the State.

CM Sarma attributed the decline in crime rates to a multifaceted approach, incorporating strong policing, developmental initiatives, and job creation for the youth. The Chief Minister underscored the role of these developmental activities in fostering a safer environment in the State. He also laid out ambitious plans, declaring, “By 2026, we will wipe out child marriage from Assam. After the next assembly session, we will also end polygamy,” without providing specific details.

The assurance of a paradigm shift in Assam’s crime scenario resonates with the Government’s commitment to address the symptoms and the root causes of criminal activities. The comprehensive strategy includes law enforcement and social and economic measures aimed at uplifting the community.

As Assam charts its course towards a brighter and safer future, Chief Minister Sarma’s vision underscores the transformative impact of holistic governance. The State’s journey from crime statistics to a potential paradise reflects the concerted efforts to create a conducive environment for citizens to thrive and prosper. With unwavering commitment and effective policies, Assam seems poised to redefine its narrative on the national stage.
