Guwahati:  On December 2, Assam is abuzz with festivities as the state observes ‘Asom Divas’ or Assam Day, commemorating the legacy of Ahom king Su-Ka-Pha.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended heartfelt greetings to the people of the state, highlighting the profound contributions of Swargadeo Chaolung Su-Ka-Pha, the visionary architect of ‘Greater Assam.’

Expressing his views on the social media platform X, CM Sarma remarked, “The great Swargadeo Chaolung Su-ka-fai laid the foundation of Greater Assam with the great ideals of harmony, good governance, and unity. There is a need for everyone to dedicate themselves to further strengthen the larger Assamese nation along the path shown by the hero of the era.”

Su-Ka-Pha, also known as Sukaphaa, was not merely a monarch but the architect of a dynasty that shaped the destiny of Assam. Born in 1228, his journey over the challenging Patkai Hills marked the beginning of the Ahom dynasty. His reign not only secured political stability but also fostered cultural assimilation, leaving a lasting impact on the diverse ethnic groups of the region.

The Ahom kingdom, established by Sukaphaa, endured for nearly six centuries, from 1228 onwards, and played a pivotal role in unifying the disparate communities of Assam. Sukaphaa’s governance principles were rooted in harmony, justice, and unity, shaping ‘Greater Assam’ into a melting pot of cultures and traditions.

December 2, celebrated as Sukaphaa Divas or Asom Divas since 1996, commemorates the historical journey and ascension of Sukaphaa. This day not only honours a historical figure but also symbolises the unity of Assam, transcending boundaries and celebrating the rich tapestry of its cultural heritage.

In recognition of exceptional contributions to the state, the Su Ka Pha award has been a prestigious honour since 1996. This year, the veteran journalist Dhirendra Nath Bejbaruah has been conferred with this esteemed award by the state government.

CM Sarma paid homage, stating, “Today is Assam Day (Su-Ka-Pha Day), and I pay my humble tribute to the founder of the Ahom kingdom and wish the people of Assam all the best. His great ideals will always inspire us to build a beautiful and prosperous Assam.”

As the state embraces the spirit of Asom Divas, the celebration serves as a reminder of Su-Ka-Pha’s enduring legacy, fostering unity, good governance, and a shared Assamese identity that continues to thrive through the centuries. Divers program has been organised across the state and in Su Ka Pha Kshetra in Jorhat.
