In a startling incident in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, two physicians falsely pronounced a newborn as deceased, orchestrating a sinister plot to sell the infant. The determined mother, Pushpa Devi, eventually succeeded in recovering her child after a month-long struggle. The implicated doctors, Dr. Akram Jamal and Dr. Hifzur Rahman, have been apprehended by the police, and the hospital involved has been sealed by the authorities.
Pushpa Devi, the wife of Jai Jairam, was admitted to the Mission Hospital and Maternal Child Surgical Center in Pachpedwa on October 29. Dr. Akram Jamal, from the hospital, enlisted the assistance of Dr. Hafizur Rahman from Siddharth Nagar for a medical procedure. Dr. Hifzur Rahman conducted the operation as planned.
Subsequently, the doctors surreptitiously sold the newborn to Nisar, the councilor of Badhni Nagar Panchayat ward no 2. Upon regaining consciousness, Pushpa Devi was informed that her child had passed away. Unconvinced, she persisted in her pursuit to reclaim her child, eventually succeeding in exposing the shocking conspiracy.
As per reports, Pushpa Devi’s husband initially believed she was in shock, attempting to console her as she persistently demanded the return of her child over the past month. Despite daily visits to the hospital with this plea, her husband eventually sought assistance from the Pachpedwa police station to file a complaint. The police, initially trying to help Pushpa Devi come to terms with her child’s alleged demise, were spurred into action by her unwavering confidence.
A First Information Report (number 409/2023) was registered at the Pachpedwa police station of the Balrampur district by Pushpa Devi.
In her complaint to the police, she said that she was admitted to the nursing home as one of the doctors was known to the couple. Both doctors Akram and Hifzur Rahman sold the newborn and cheated them. Based on her complaint the accused have been booked under IPC section 311 (thug).
Inspector-in-charge Awadhesh Raj Singh revealed that they initially considered her inability to accept the loss, but her determined persistence led them to initiate an investigation. A crucial tip-off suggested the child might have been sold.
During the inquiry, it was uncovered that Pushpa Devi had given birth to a healthy baby. However, doctors Akram Jamal and Hifzur Rahman had surreptitiously handed over the child to councillor Nisar, falsely informing Pushpa Devi of the child’s demise. Subsequently, the doctors were arrested and incarcerated, and the child was successfully recovered from Nisar’s residence and reunited with the family.
According to police, the arrested accused claimed that Nisar was without a child hence they gave the child to him without taking any money. However, the same has not yet been confirmed. The police are investigating all angles which could also involve a child trafficking racket.
Meanwhile, there are reports indicating that the councillor has managed to evade capture by fleeing to Nepal, and ongoing endeavors are in progress to apprehend him.
In response to these unfolding events, the health department took decisive action by sealing off the Mission Hospital and Maternal Child Surgical Center in Pachpedwa. On Wednesday, they not only sealed the facility but also removed the sign outside, with the administration subsequently disclosing that the hospital had been operating in violation of legal regulations.
During the course of the hospital raid, officials discovered that another healthcare facility in the vicinity was similarly operating without the necessary valid documentation. Consequently, this second hospital was promptly shut down as well.
