Imphal: Chief Minister of Manipur N Biren Singh released the Diglot Edition of the Constitution of India in Manipuri Language (Meetei Mayek Script) at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on November 26, which is celebrated as Constitution Day every year.

In a symbolic gesture towards linguistic diversity and cultural inclusivity, the release of the Diglot Edition in Manipuri Language with the Meetei Mayek Script aims to make the constitutional text more accessible to the people of Manipur. The event underscores the importance of celebrating India’s constitutional legacy and promoting linguistic diversity by making key documents available in regional languages.

Constitution Day is celebrated across the country on November 26 every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, which came into effect from January 26, 1950.

During the event, CM Singh highlighted the comprehensive nature of the Constitution, encompassing Directive Principles, Fundamental Duties, Rights of the people, and the political structures of government institutions. He expressed pride in the inclusion of constitutional amendments in the special Diglot Edition unveiled on November 26, 2023.

Singh commended the efforts of the officials from the Law Department and other contributors who played a vital role in translating the Constitution into Meetei Mayek scripts. The initiative aims to make the constitutional text more accessible and meaningful to the people of Manipur in their native language.

Expressing gratitude, CM Singh appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other central leaders for their foresighted vision and special concern for Manipur and its people. He recalled various initiatives undertaken by the central government, including the implementation of the Inner Line Permit System, the renaming of Mount Harriet in Andaman as Mount Manipur, and the lifting of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, demonstrating the leadership’s respect and honour towards the people of Manipur.

During the event, CM Singh expressed gratitude to the Central Government for recognizing the bravery of Manipur’s forefathers, naming the third ship of the Visakhapatnam-class stealth guided missile destroyer of the Indian Navy as INS Imphal. He announced his attendance at the unveiling ceremony of the INS Imphal crest in New Delhi on November 28.

Acknowledging the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other central leaders in contributing to Manipur’s development, CM Singh urged the people to reciprocate by supporting the state’s progress towards peace and development. He emphasised the need for collective efforts to honour the respect and attention given to Manipur by the central leadership.

CM Singh, along with Public Works Department Minister Govindas Konthoujam, IPR Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan, and other dignitaries, participated in a pledge-taking ceremony by reading out the Preamble of the Constitution of India in Manipuri. The event aimed to foster a sense of unity and commitment to constitutional values.

The Chief Minister’s proactive involvement in promoting linguistic diversity, honouring cultural heritage, and recognising Manipur’s contributions were highlighted during the Constitution Day celebrations, emphasising the state’s commitment to peace, development, and inclusivity.
