The incident occurred at Moreh town Ward No. 7, Eastern Shine School Ground, under Tengnoupal district, when the deceased police officer was on duty on a makeshift helipad.

According to sources, suspected Kuki militants have been targeting the police officer for a long time. The deceased SDPO Anand was hit by a bullet suspected to be fired from a sniper rifle.

SDPO Ch. Anand sustained serious injuries during the ambush. He was rushed to the Moreh hospital by the police but succumbed to his injuries later.

It should be mentioned that violence started in Manipur on May 3, during a solidarity march by tribal students union against granting of ST status to Meitei community. So far 180 people have lost their lives and thousands were injured. Over 60,000 people were internally displaced in the six-month-long unrest. The CBI and NIA are investigating several cases related to the violence of Manipur. Recently, the NIA has busted a foreign terror module involved in spreading violence in the state and arrested several Kuki militants. No major incidents of violence were not reported in the last 15 days from the state. But today’s incident is the first of its kind where a senior police official was killed by militants in the last six months.
