Ahead of the assembly polls in Mizoram, a joint operation by Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police led to the recovery and seizure of a large number of explosives and ammunition. The joint operation by the paramilitary force and the State police took place in Mizoram’s Siaha district.

Acting on a specific input about the movement of warlike stores towards Myanmar through the Lungbun crossing, Assam Rifles, along with the district police administration, launched a joint operation in and around the area on October 8 evening, and the team spotted two unknown individuals.

According to officials, those individuals were carrying some articles, and when they were asked to halt, the two fellows dropped their bags and fled towards Myanmar, crossing the Kolodyne River.

“When the joint team approached and checked the bags they left behind, they found some items but the two fellows could not be apprehended,” Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, IGP (HQ) of Mizoram, said.

The team recovered 100 numbers of Geletine, 100 numbers of Detonator, 150 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 10 metres of Wire (codex), and 10 numbers of Battery cells.

The recovered items were produced at the Siaha police by the joint team. A case has been registered at the Siaha police station Acts against the unknown accused for further investigation.

The Election Commission on October 9 announced the schedule for assembly polls in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana.

Polls will be held in Mizoram on November 7, Chhattisgarh on November 7 and November 17, Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Rajasthan on November 23 and Telangana on November 30.

In a 40-seat Assembly of Mizoram in 2018, Mizo National Front managed to win 26 seats with a vote share of 37.8 per cent. Congress secured five seats, and BJP won a single seat. Zoramthanga is the current Chief Minister of the State.

The counting of votes will take place on December 3 in all these 5 States.
