Every religion has its own set of festivals, and within the Hindu faith, there exists a vibrant array of celebrations. Today marks the auspicious occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, a festival dedicated to commemorating the birth of Bhagwan Krishna. This day has been celebrated with tremendous joy and fervour throughout India. In the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, believed to be the birthplace of Krishna, countless devotees congregated at temples to offer their prayers and seek divine blessings. These temples were adorned with resplendent flowers and radiant lights, accompanied by the performance of special pujas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm wishes to the citizens of the country on this significant Janmashtami day (September 7), hoping for renewed energy and enthusiasm in the lives of “every member of my family,” referring to the citizens. PM Modi concluded his message with a resounding “Jai Shri Krishna” on his Twitter post.

— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) September 7, 2023

Janmashtami holds a paramount position in the Hindu calendar, signifying the birth of Bhagwan Krishna, revered as an incarnation of Vishnu, the Supreme God. Krishna is venerated for his playful and mischievous character, as well as his profound wisdom and compassion. This festival serves as an occasion for families to come together and rejoice. Many households dress their children as Krishna, and delectable sweets and dishes are specially prepared. Janmashtami is a day of festivity and devotion, prompting contemplation of Krishna’s teachings and the quest for his blessings.

Apart from the aforementioned celebrations, various customs and practices are observed during Janmashtami across India. Some individuals opt to observe a fast on this day. The type of fast undertaken determines the permissible foods, with three main categories:

Nirjala fast: This is the most stringent form of fasting, entailing complete abstinence from both food and water throughout the day.

Fvrat ka khana: This type of fast permits the consumption of specific foods such as milk, curd, fruits, and vegetables.

Fruitarian fast: In this category, only fruits and nuts are allowed for consumption.

For those following a Nirjala fast, the option of drinking water or fruit juices is available. Additionally, limited salt intake is permissible, although it is advisable to minimise its consumption whenever possible.

If you are observing the “vrat ka khana” fast, you can include the following foods in your diet: Milk, Curd, Fruits, Vegetables, Sabudana, Kuttu, Sama, Singhare ka atta, and Rajgira ka atta. While you can consume salt, it is advisable to limit its intake if possible.

For those opting for a fruitarian fast, you have the flexibility to enjoy any variety of fruit or nut, along with the option to drink fruit juices. It’s crucial to pay attention to your body’s signals and consume what you feel comfortable with. If you experience weakness or dizziness, it is recommended to break your fast. Here are some specific foods often considered beneficial for Janmashtami fasting:

Milk: Milk is a valuable source of protein and calcium, known for its potential to detoxify the body.

Curd: Curd is rich in probiotics and is believed to enhance digestion.

Fruits: Fruits provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, helping you stay satiated.

Vegetables: Vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, aiding in satiety.

Sabudana: Sabudana, a gluten-free tapioca product, is low in calories and is reputed to support digestion and weight management.

Kuttu: Kuttu, a gluten-free buckwheat variety, is high in fiber and also contributes to digestion and weight management.

Sama: Sama, a gluten-free millet, offers high fiber content and is associated with improved digestion and weight control.

Singhare ka atta: Singhare ka atta, made from water chestnuts, is gluten-free and fiber-rich, promoting digestion and weight management.

Rajgira ka atta: Rajgira ka atta, derived from amaranth, is gluten-free and high in fiber, known for its positive effects on digestion and weight management.

It is essential to recognise that these are general dietary guidelines. The specific foods suitable for Janmashtami fasting may vary based on individual preferences and beliefs.

On this day, diverse celebrations take place, with some savouring special meals, while others engage in reading religious texts or listening to bhajans (devotional songs). Many also embark on pilgrimages to temples or participate in community gatherings. Regardless of the chosen mode of celebration, people from across India unite to commemorate the birth of Krishna, a cherished figure in Hindu mythology. Here are a few examples of how Janmashtami is observed in various regions of India:

Mathura and Vrindavan: These two cities hold paramount significance as the recognised birthplaces of Krishna, making them the epicenters of Janmashtami festivities. The temples in Mathura and Vrindavan undergo ornate decoration with vibrant flowers and illuminating lights, accompanied by the performance of elaborate pujas (rituals). Devotees hailing from all corners of India converge upon Mathura and Vrindavan to partake in the grand celebration of Janmashtami.
