Cricket World Cup 2023: Unravelling the muted excitement, lack of hype and craze

As the countdown of the Cricket World Cup enters its final stretch with less than 50 days to go, a rather noticeable absence of the usual fervour and excitement is apparent in India. Traditionally a nation that thrives on cricket, the subdued atmosphere leading up to this major sporting event raises questions for the lack of buzz

Cricket, often touted as a religion in India, has witnessed its share of glorious moments in the form of Cricket World Cup. However, the upcoming edition of this prestigious tournament in October 2023 has seemed to lack the buzz and fervour that were once synonymous with cricket’s marquee event.

The waning excitement surrounding the forthcoming World Cup can be attributed to a combination of factors, primarily the underwhelming performance of the Indian cricket team in recent matches. The lackluster performance on the field has left fans questioning the team’s readiness and competitive edge for the upcoming tournament.

Additionally, the absence of prominent players like Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan (whatever may be the reason) often regarded as the backbone of the team, has undoubtedly cast a shadow of uncertainty over India’s prospects in the World Cup. These factors have collectively dampened the usual fervour and anticipation associated with cricket’s most anticipated event, leaving enthusiasts hopeful that the team’s fortunes will take a positive turn and reignite the passion that cricket typically commands in the nation.

The recent string of cricketing setbacks for India, including losses in the 2014 T-20 final, the 2015 ODI Semi-final, 2016 Semi-finals, 2019 Semi-final, 2022 Semi-final, and even two ICC Test Championship finals, has led to an intriguing comparison – India being equated to the position held by South Africa: ‘The Chokers’.

This analogy draws attention to India’s parallel trajectory of encountering significant challenges in the knock-out matches, similar to South Africa’s historical reputation for faltering at crucial junctures.

India’s last victory in an ICC tournament in 2013 underscores the growing sense of frustration among fans, who are yearning for the return of those triumphant days. The cumulative effect of these repeated losses could indeed be a contributing factor to the subdued atmosphere surrounding the upcoming Cricket World Cup, as the nation collectively holds its breath for a resurgence that could revive the jubilant spirit of cricket in India.

Despite his prior success in coaching the under-19 cricket team, Rahul Dravid’s transition to coach the senior Indian team has been met with challenges and a lack of the expected positive outcomes. Dravid, renowned for his meticulous approach and cricketing acumen, was initially hailed as a promising addition to the coaching staff.

However, the anticipated success has remained elusive, raising concerns among fans and enthusiasts. As expectations remain high, there is a hope for the much-anticipated combination of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid to make a significant impact.

The hope is that their partnership will help reinvigorate the team’s performance and bring about a positive change in India’s cricketing fortunes. The collective gaze of the cricketing world is now set on this duo, eagerly awaiting their collaborative efforts to translate into victories and bring back the glory that fans have been longing for.

Indeed, another significant factor contributing to the subdued enthusiasm for the upcoming Cricket World Cup could be the shifting landscape of children’s recreational activities. In the years spanning from 2008 to 2016, cricket held a central place in the lives of many children, who would often engage in outdoor games and spend hours playing cricket. The sport was a unifying force that brought everyone together, fostering a deep passion for the game.

The composition of cricket’s fan base has also evolved over the years. While cricket remains immensely popular in certain countries, the global fan landscape has diversified. Newer fans might not have the same emotional connection to the World Cup as their predecessors did, leading to a perceived lack of hype.

However, in recent times, the prevalence of social media, mobile phones, and online games has noticeably altered children’s preferences. The allure of digital platforms and screen-based activities has shifted their focus away from the outdoors and traditional sports like cricket. The engagement with virtual worlds and online interactions has taken precedence over physical activities, leading to a decline in the grassroots cricket culture that once thrived in the streets of Cricket.

Also, participation of youth in Politics have superseded cricket in India, with the younger generation favouring political content over the sport. This shift can be attributed to enhanced information accessibility, a growing social consciousness, and changing cultural dynamics. The trend reflects a desire for active civic participation and engagement with societal challenges. Although the current cricket’s appeal persists the youth to incline towards political discussions on digital platforms.

This shift in youth’s interests not only impacts their personal engagement with cricket but also has a broader impact on the sport’s popularity and the next generation of players. The lack of active participation among youngsters could potentially lead to a diminished pool of talented cricketers in the future, further influencing the nation’s performance on the international stage.

In light of this trend, the challenge for cricket enthusiasts and authorities is to find innovative ways to reignite the passion for cricket among children and youth. Striking a balance between digital engagement and physical activities, while fostering a renewed interest in the sport, will be essential in revitalising the cricketing spirit and ensuring a bright future for the game in India.

As the Cricket World Cup approaches, it is a crucial moment for the cricketing community in India to reflect, adapt, and renew the nation’s enduring love for the sport. Absolutely, the unwavering support of fans and a resurgence of cricket craze can undoubtedly serve as a significant boost for our cricketers.

The fervent backing from fans not only elevates the players’ morale but also infuses them with a sense of purpose and determination to perform at their best. The collective energy of passionate supporters can create an electrifying atmosphere that motivates players to go beyond their limits and deliver exceptional performances.

History has shown that when cricket fever grips a nation, players are inspired to rise to the occasion, drawing strength from the overwhelming support and cheers of their fellow countrymen. The iconic moments etched in cricketing history are often a result of the symbiotic relationship between players and fans. When fans passionately rally behind the team, it serves as a driving force for players to excel, pushing them to achieve new heights.

The rallying support of more than 100 crore fans can be a catalyst for change. The collective dream of witnessing India reclaim the World Cup can spark a renewed sense of purpose and unity among players and fans alike. With a fervent fan base and the right conditions in place, the stage is set for our cricketers to excel, to perform better, and to bring back the trophy to the nation after 12 years.
