During the 27th Media Orientation Capsule Course at Hakimpet, Telangana, the Indian Air Force provided valuable insights into the successful implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies and their impact on pilot training and operational readiness.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is embracing cutting-edge and immersive technologies, including AI and Virtual Reality (VR), to bolster operational efficiency and effective training.
As a part of its commitment to self-reliance and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the Indian Air Force has integrated AI into its machine planning systems and adopted Virtual Reality Simulations for cadet training at various Air Force Stations (AFS) all across the country.
The AI Centres in the Indian Air Force
The Indian Air Force has set up an AI Centre of Excellence in Rajokri, New Delhi, with UDAAN (Unit for Digitisation, Automation, Artificial Intelligence and Application Networking), Apart from this, Big Data Analytics, a Machine Learning Platform, has been commissioned in the IAF.
The IAF has also deployed an application that captures electronic intelligence gathered by it as well as from other intelligence agencies and integrates them into a common structure for a Comprehensive Electronic Order of Battle.
The IAF has developed an AI-based Campaign Planning and Analysis System (CPAS), which is being used to provide functionality and effectiveness for the planning of campaigns and debriefing solutions for all aircraft under the Indian Air Force. IAF’s fleet consists of a wide variety of aircraft, which come with their own standards and systems.
Benefits of Virtual Reality Systems and AI in the Indian Air Force
At AFS Hakimpet and the other Air Force academies, fighter pilots undergoing stage two training seem to be benefitting from hands-on experience with VR headsets. The cadets can virtually experience flying in a simulated environment on the ground enabling them to gain valuable skills and confidence before they undertake flying missions in real aircraft.
The indigenisation VR simulation has been taken up, which has proven to be cost-effective and has significantly reduced the high expenses that would have been otherwise incurred on flying hours using actual aircraft.
These VR headsets provide a 360-degree view of the flying experience and have enhanced the training pilots’ situation awareness and decision-making capabilities. The adoption of this technology aligns with the goals of the promotion of self-reliance in defence and homegrown innovations.
By integrating AI and VR systems into training and operations, the IAF aims to achieve higher levels of efficiency, preparedness and success in safeguarding the nation’s airspace and responding to humanitarian needs, the officials stressed.
Indigenous AI in Machine Planning Systems
The IAF is also making strides in developing indigenous AI-based machine systems and has collaborated with various defence startups, the IAF is creating modules for machine planning, radar and other systems using homegrown technologies. This move not only enhances operational effectiveness but strengthens India’s Defence capabilities by reducing the dependence on foreign technology.
The integration of AI empowers the IAF with advanced data analytics and decision support tools and streamlines the mission planning and execution process. The Indian Air Force’s adoption of immersive technologies and commitment to indigenous innovation reflects its dedication to staying at the forefront of modern warfare capabilities, officials said.
Collaborations
Safeguarding the Indian Airspace is the primary responsibility of the IAF, and it will be enabled through the full network system of sensors. To achieve this, the IAF is collaborating with leading S&T (Science and Technology) Institutions in India, such as Bharat Electricals Limited (BEL), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kharagpur and IIT Jabalpur).
