Police, at last, have registered a case against workers of Muslim Youth League, the youth wing of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for raising threatening anti-Hindu slogans in Kanhangad, Kasaragod district. Hosdurg Police has registered a case against three hundred people including women. It is for “trying to create hatred between two communities through raising slogans”. The slogans were raised during the March carried out against the Manipur issue.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has started an inquiry into the incident. It is to be remembered that last year a child had raised similar slogans, during a Popular Front of India (PFI) rally in Alappuzha, against Hindus and Christians. Even though Kerala Police shied away from arresting the culprits immediately, NIA arrested the man who carried the child on his shoulders and he is still in jail. Kerala Police registered the case after the protests mounted.
The slogan they raised was: “Before completing the reading of Ramayana, Hindus will be hanged in the temple and burnt alive”. It was a rude threat against Hindus in the name of Manipur issue; a real camouflage. The threat is significant in the month of Karkkidakam, the Malayalam month which coincides with monsoon. Keralites read Ramayana during the whole month. They call it “Ramayana Masa”.
The video of the slogan raising march turned viral in social media. Immediately, leaders of BJP, VHP, Hindu Aikya Vedi and Yuva Morcha came down heavily on IUML and its youth wing. Several protests took place throughout the state. Then only the police moved into action, after several hours.
Yesterday, Muslim Youth League General Secretary P.K. Firoze had ousted its worker Abdul Salam of Kanhangad from the organisation for sloganeering; but BJP alleged that it is just an eyewash.
