After witnessing heavy rainfall for more than a week, Mumbai faces another extreme heavy rainfall episode on July 26 and July 27. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the Mumbai City and Suburban area from 8 pm on July 26 till July 27 afternoon.

All schools and colleges in Mumbai’s city and suburbs, Thane and Navi Mumbai, remain shut today in view of the ‘red’ alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued the order yesterday as the city recorded the wettest July this year since 1991, surpassing the 1,500 mm mark. There is a high possibility of disruption in traffic, local train, and bus services.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be closed for two hours between 12 noon and 2 pm today, according to the Maharashtra highway traffic police. The closure has been ordered for the clearing of the debris after the landslide that took place on the Expressway late July 23. Officials also said vehicles going towards Mumbai from Pune could use the old Pune-Mumbai highway.

The road near IT Park in the Goregaon area has caved in. One-way traffic has been stopped due to road subsidence.

Two lakes in the city— Vehar and Tansa — overflowed early July 26 after reaching their full capacity. As of now, three out of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai have overflowed, but the BMC said that a 10 per cent water cut imposed from July 1 will continue “unless the overall stock in all the seven lakes touches the 70 per cent mark”.

Residents of low-lying areas on July 27 woke up to flooded streets, under bridges and homes after heavy rain lashed the city. As this is the case during every monsoon in the city, the roughly an-hour heavy downpour from 12 midnight to 1 am inundated many parts of the city.

Amid heavy rainfall, several parts of Nagpur city witnessed waterlogging on July 26 and July 27. Due to severe waterlogging, Narendra Nagar Railway Under Bridge and Airport Entry road are closed today.

“The streets were waterlogged and rainwater entered many houses in North, East, South and West Nagpur,” said Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s fire and emergency services department officials.

Mumbai & surrounding areas will get heavy to very heavy rains next 48 hours. As expected, South Mumbai got heavier rains in Colaba, with 223mm. Another over 200mm is coming next 48 hours.
