Assam: Iman of a Mosque, Natun Mati Masjid in Mariani town in upper Assam stabbed a lady for refusing his proposal to marry him. The Imam whose name is Abbas Khan was arrested in Assam’s Jorhat district for attacking a widow and mother of two children with a knife after she refused to marry him. The woman victim was severely injured and admitted in Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH), police said on July 18th.

Imam harassed the widow post the death of her husband

According to a senior police officer in Morioni, Abbas Khan had proposed to the woman several times. The Imam was harassing the woman ever since she lost her husband a few years ago. The victim has two children and she refused the Imam’s proposal several times. But the Imam was stalking her almost every day whenever she was out of her home for work. When the woman declined his offer, Khan became enraged and devised a plan to attack her. Locals Expressed Shock Over the Attack

Locals said it was an attempt to murder the woman as Imam Abbas stabbed her with a knife several times in her stomach and other parts of the body. They said they were shocked to know the crime committed by the Imam as he is a respectable person in their society. He was the Imam of the Natun Mati Mosque for the past 12 years and he is married and had children from his previous marriage. c

Altercation with the victim enraged the Imam

Mariani police said that Khan broke into the victim’s house in Mariani town on July 17 and tried to force her to accept his proposal. As per report the two got into an argument and the victim asked Abbas to leave her home. Angry with the refusal the Iman attacked the woman with a knife and hit her several times. The victim was severely injured.

Victim’s children informed the neighbours and they came to rescue the injured woman. The neighbours rushed to the victim’s house but the Iman managed to escape from the spot. Locals took the woman to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment. They informed the police and a case was lodged in the Mariani police station. Acting swiftly the Mariani police arrested Imam Abbas Khan on July 18th morning. Doctors in JMCH said the victim is stable and out of danger now.
