Guwahati: Notorious drug smuggler Shahid Hussain shot by Assam police. The drug smuggler sustained a bullet injury while trying to flee from police custody in Bokajan town in Karbi Anglong district on the night of July 5.
Karbi Anglong police said that the accused was arrested for drug trafficking. The police seized 1.176 kgs of heroin drugs packed inside 94 soap boxes stuffed into a coffin during a raid at the smuggler’s house near the Assam- Nagaland border under Khatkhati police station in Karbi Anglong district. While returning from the search Shahid Hussain jumped from the police vehicle and tried to flee. He even tried to snatch the service pistol of a policeman. The police had to resort to firing to stop him from fleeing the scene, which led to his injury.
However, police arrested another drug smuggler Ashadul Rahman during the raid on Shahid Hussain’s house. Ashadul was there to hide the drug consignment before the police team reached there. Police said that both the arrested drug smugglers were running a drug racket in the guise of an ice factory. It should be mentioned that Shahid Hussain was arrested earlier and jailed for drug trafficking. He was out of jail six months ago and started drug trafficking while on bail.
Meanwhile, a lawyer was arrested with drugs at the court premises in Nagaon district. The arrested lawyer is Hussain Mohammad Rizwan. The advocates in Nagaon CJM court apprehended the drug smuggler while selling drugs in court uniforms and handed them over to the police. The lawyer was also involved in a case of rape of a minor. Earlier, advocate Hussain Mohammad Rizwan was expelled from the Nagaon Bar Association.
On the other hand, as per secret information received from a reliable source, a search operation was conducted at Amaraguri village in Morigaon district on July 5 at around 6.00 PM, and two nos. of accused persons, namely Mainul Hoque and Aminul Islam, apprehended and recovered five nos. of Plastic Vials with Heroin from their possession. During interrogation, it was known that the seized drug was purchased from one drug smuggler, namely Saddam of Dhingorati Village under Laharighat police station of the district, and immediately a search was conducted and apprehended another two drug smugglers, namely Saddam Hussain and Jiaur Rahman. In one soap case with suspected Heroin, three nos. of Motorcycles and Mobile Phones were seized.
On June 26, Assam police seized drugs worth 38 crore in Guwahati and Karimganj districts. Wanted drug mafia Hasan and Mustakin were arrested in Guwahati with 2.2 kg of Heroin. Drug smugglers Ahad and Mokbul were arrested with drugs worth Rs 20 crores in Karimganj district. Assam police seized Heroin worth Rupees 72 crores in 4 days from June 23 to 26th. Drugs worth Rupees 45 crores were seized in Karimganj in two days, coming from Mizoram; Drugs worth Rupees 9 crores were seized in Karbi Anglong district near the Nagaland border.
It should be mentioned that Assam police have arrested almost 9400 drug peddlers in the last two years as a part of its war on drugs. A total of 5600 cases have been registered in Assam under the NDPS Act during the same period. Drugs worth Rupees over 1500 crore have been confiscated by Assam police in the last two years. Almost 240 kilograms of Heroin, 72000 kilograms of Ganja, 283 kilograms of Opium, 98 lakhs Psychotropic tablets,215 kilograms of Cannabis, 40 kilograms of Cocaine and 4.78 lakh bottles of banned cough syrups have been seized, and most of these were destroyed by the state police in the last two years.
