On June 30, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that a passenger could carry up to two sealed bottles of alcohol in the metro, on its official Twitter account. The DMRC tweeted, “Hi. Yes 2 sealed bottles of alcohol is allowed in Delhi Metro,” in response to a Twitter user’s query, which now has been deleted.

Till recently, carrying alcohol in Delhi Metro was banned, except for the Airport Express Line.
The DMRC has clarified that carrying two sealed bottles of alcohol in Delhi Metro must be done in accordance with the provisions on the Airport Express Line. The DMRC further revealed that a committee comprising officials from CISF and DMRC reviewed the earlier order, which had banned carrying alcohol in Delhi Metro, except Airport Express Line, altogether.
The DMRC said in its statement, “Two sealed bottles of alcohol per person is allowed to be carried on the Delhi Metro at par with the provisions on the Airport Express Line. A committee comprising officials from CISF and DMRC have reviewed the earlier order. As per an earlier order, carrying of alcohol was banned in the Delhi Metro except on the Airport Express Line.”
The DMRC, however, clarified that drinking inside the Metro premises is still prohibited and the passengers are required to maintain proper decorum while travelling. The DMRC also warned against exhibiting indecent behaviour under the influence of alcohol, stating that suitable action will be taken.
“However, drinking alcohol inside Metro premises is strictly prohibited. Metro passengers are requested to maintain proper decorum while travelling. In case, any passenger is found behaving in an indecent manner under the influence of alcohol, suitable action shall be taken under the relevant provisions of law,” DMRC further said.

However, DMRC’s decision to allow alcohol in Delhi Metro has criticisms for possible law and order implications, in light of the recent rise in objectionable behaviour in the metros.
“This should not be allowed as we Indians are masters in flouting rules. This may create ruckus as people may start drinking from those bottles once inside the Metro,” wrote a Twitter user.

Another Twitter user wrote, “Strange!! Usually alcoholic drinks are denied by the CISF. Though I believe it’s OK, cause metros don’t have luggage compartment like flights & there is no way to ensure that the person carrying won’t do anything inappropriate. Glass bottles are a security risk themselves.”
