On June 3, during Congress MLA’s victory party, a 28-year-old man was brutally stabbed to death. According to police officials, the deceased was fatally stabbed in a fight over a song. The name of the deceased is identified as Pakali Varun. He is a local of Tarikere town of Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka.

As per the police officials, the supporters of Congress MLA GH Srinivas from of Tarikere Assembly constituency had arranged a function to celebrate his victory in the recently held Assembly election. The MLA defeated the BJP contender D S Suresh by a margin of 12,131 votes.

Trouble began when the deceased Varun insisted on putting a well-known Kannada movie song. However, another group rejected Varun’s request and asked him to play a different song. This other group was led by the main suspect Kabab Murthy. After that, an altercation took place between the two groups, as per Tarikere’s Inspector B Veerendra.

Shortly after the orchestra had finished playing, Varun was allegedly attacked with a machete by Kabab Murthy and was stabbed in his stomach. During this scuffle, Murthy also injured Manju and Sanju by stabbing them in their hands and legs. Varun was taken to McGann Hospital, where he died because of his stab wounds. The Inspector added that Murthy and his gang fled to Bengaluru from the scene right after the incident.

The Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police, Uma Prashanth, visited the crime scene and organised a police team to apprehend the suspect. She told the media that the gruesome incident occurred late at night at 10.30 PM.

While talking to the media, the Tarikere Inspector and Investigation Officer B Veerendra stated that police had arrested seven accused from Bengaluru, “Following definite clues, we chased the accused and arrested seven from a lodge in Bengaluru in the wee hours of Sunday(June 4)”. The names of the arrested individuals are K Murthy, Naveen, Sanjay, Gagan, Nithin, Dhanush and Eshwar.

The Inspector states that the police have registered a case in connection with this incident against 12 persons under relevant sections of IPC section 302 ( murder ), 307 (attempt to murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (guilty of rioting), 148 (rioting with a deadly weapon).

He stated that the other five suspects are still at large but will be apprehended soon. The Inspector claimed that both the accused and the deceased had a history of animosity which might have sparked this incident.
