The last nine years have seen a comprehensive approach fructify be it farmers’ income support, agricultural insurance schemes, irrigation coverage, impetus to organic farming, to FPOs, to women farmers, infrastructural support or digitisation of services through the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM), the government has adopted a full 360 degree when it comes to supporting our farmers. Aa an example, more than 11 crore farmers have benefitted from the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi and over 23 crores have had the Soil Health Card issued to them.
Additionally, through the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, which provides farmers an assured Direct Benefit Transfer cash transfer of Rs. 6,000 per year, or the increased MSP for all mandated Kharif, Rabi and other commercial crops, or even the Central Sector Scheme for the formation and promotion of thousands of new FPOs along with equity Grant, the government has shown how its policy formation goes beyond just the obvious benefit accrual.
When it comes to agricultural mechanisation including machines, equipment, high-tech hubs and hiring centres, by March, 2022 close to 5.5 crore had been allocated. Alongside, digitisation has seen a huge push, with many mandis being integrated on the e-NAM platform. Kisan Rail services have been transporting perishables since 2020 and in a push to facilitate technology for the benefit of agriculture, over Rs. 52 crores have been released to the ICAR for purchase of 300 Kisan Drones. The launch of the National Mission for Edible Oils, the Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) scheme to increase efficient use of water, the creation of a start-up eco system in agriculture and allied sectors empowering farmers through renewable energy utilisation, and the emphatic growth in export of Agri and allied commodities has taken our agriculture many leaps forward.
Similarly, it is a holistic approach to allied farming (livestock, forestry, jal shakti, drip irrigation etc.) and a positive approach towards the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and the Namami Gange Programme that have given an incredible impetus to natural farming. Staying true to its commitment, the government also proposes to promote sustainable natural farming systems via Bhartiya Prakratik Krishi Padhati (BPKP) scheme. The active championing of “Shree Anna” or millets in the international Year of Millets (2023) with Indian Institute of Millet Research, Hyderabad being declared as the Centre of Excellence shows yet again, how the government is quick to adapt to the need of the hour – both for our farmers and our economy.
Creating history in the procurement of pulses, the increase in oil seed production or the domineering 109 per cent rise in export of rice in nine years, PM Modi-led government has created the roadmap for sustained growth and progress. To sum it up, one fact states the entire case: the budget allocation for agriculture has increased 4.5 times (Rs. in crore) . This is over 300 per cent increase in budget allocation in 9 years! Clearly, PM Modi-led government has, by way of affirmative policy initiatives shown that they stand behind the success of our farmers. Afterall, not only does India live in villages, it lives because of them.
