An IPS officer in Kerala has presented the State’s grim picture regarding the growing drug menace. Kochi City Police Commissioner K Sethuraman cited a shocking case in which the sons of a Superintendent of Police have become drug addicts, pushing the family into a crisis. The officer was addressing the Kerala Police Officers’ Association (KPOA) state conference on May 25. He also mentioned an incident in which the son of a police officer became a drug addict and got killed in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kochi City Police Commissioner said that even the children of senior police officers are drug addicts. Police are very much a part of our society; hence there is every chance for the children of the police officers to fall easy prey to drug consumption.

Commissioner added that the consumption of drugs spreads fast among the youths in the State. If the children of senior police officers fall into it, what would be the plight of the youths belonging to society’s lower strata, he wonders. Police officers should take their own initiative to look into it. They should always check what is happening in their quarters.

Kochiites were shell-shocked to hear their City Commissioner concerning the frightening spread of drug consumption around them. Because hardly a day passes sans a media report of a drug haul another, large or small. A few days before, Bharat Navy and Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB), in a joint operation in deep seas, seized Rs 25,000 crore worth of drugs off Kochi; a Pakistani is in custody after being caught along the drug cargo. Terrorists use this modus operandi to fund terrorism since the Modi regime has taken stringent measures to block Hawala movements. Not only boys but also girls are drug consumers these days. Under these circumstances, Police Commissioner’s revelation gives sleepless nights to Keralites.
