IPL 2023: Sharp drop in TV viewership for season opener; digital viewership on rise

The opening match of IPL (Indian Premier League) 2023, between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has recorded the lowest number in TV viewership which was not observed in the past six sessions even though the digital viewership registered a record-breaking opening day number said a sport.

According to information, the official broadcaster for the IPL 2023 tournament recorded a TVR of 7.29 for the opening fixture, a sharp drop from 2021 edition (8.25) and 2020 (10.36).

The engagement number for the first game comes at a lowly rating of 33 percent, which is the second lowest the second lowest in the past six seasons and the BARC numbers were also reflective of this drop with the curtain raiser recorded at 22 per cent as opposed to previous year`s 23.1 per cent.

The IPL 2023 official digital broadcaster, Jio Cinema has surpassed the viewership of Disney+Hotstar from the last year by very first week of the tournament, said a statement.

Jio Cinemas TATA IPL Debut proved to be hugely successful marked by the record-breaking opening day numbers. According to a statement, the total match views on Jio Cinemas touched 50 crores.

“A total of 2.5 crore downloads of Jio Cinema were accounted for, making it a record for the most installed app in a single day.

Additionally, over 6 crore unique viewers tuned in for the GT vs CSK match, which achieved a peak concurrency of over 1.6 crore on the platform.”

It is to be noted that the 16th season of the Indian Premier League features commentary in 12 languages, offered by the digital streaming platform Jio Cinema. Apart from the quality of cricket and the introduction of new rules like Impact Player, commentary in various regional languages has been the highlight of the show. Out of the 12, Bhojpuri and Punjabi commentary stood out for the fans.

JioCinema’s regional language commentary is bringing a whole new level of excitement and engagement to fans across the heartland.

Bhojpuri commentary has a formidable line-up featuring Mohammed Saif, Satya Prakash, Sneh Upadhyay and others. The inaugural encounter between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans also featured film star Ravi Kishan.

With the legendary Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan at the helm, fans are treated to an unforgettable experience that seamlessly blends the passion of cricket with the vibrancy of Bhojpuri culture.
