Bihar: ASI Mumtaj Ahmed shot Sudhir Yadav for evading vehicle at check post in Jehanabad; 5 constables & ASI suspended

A 23-year-old youth in Jehanabad of Bihar was chased and shot by the police for evading a vehicle checking post near Anantpur village on March 28; the youth, identified as Sudhir Yadav, a resident of Korthu village of Nalanda, was then rushed to a private hospital by some locals where he is said to be battling for life.

It’s been learnt that a police team has been checking the vehicles near Anantpur village under Ghosi police station limits of Jehanabad, where Sudhir evaded the checking out of fear as he didn’t have a driving license and helmet, following which the police team gave him a chase and shot him.

As per the media reports, Sudhir was shot in his chest, after which he fell on the road travelling a short distance; the locals rushed him to a private hospital, where he is being treated.

Talking to the reporters’ father of Sudhir, Ravindra Yadav said that his son was going towards a local market when he saw policemen checking documents and helmets of the commuters; he tried to evade out of fear, following which the police gave him chase and shot him. It was learnt that Sudhir, a BA second-year student, is his father’s only son and was married only last year.

The incident sparked outrage among the locals following which Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mumtaj Ahmed was arrested by the police under IPC 307 and 27 of the Arms Act; he was brought up before the court from where he was sent to jail, another member of the team Station House Officer (SHO) Chandrahas Kumar Singh along with ASI Bhim Kumar Singh has been suspended. At the same time, constables Mahesh and Vimal/Vinay Kumar have also been attached to the police lines, claimed a report of the telegraphindia.

Speaking on the development, Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Jehanabad Ashok Pandey said that the ASI who shot Sudhir Yadav is in jail now, while SHO Chandrahas Singh and ASI Bhim Singh have been suspended, the other two policemen involved in the incident are also sent to the police line.
