In one of their swift action against Khalistani separatism, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry blocked as many as six YouTube channels. These channels were held for allegedly promoting separatist ideas and were mostly handled by people living in foreign countries.
As reported by PTI, the Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra said, “six to eight YouTube channels, operating from foreign countries, have been blocked over the past 10 days”.
These channels were promoting pro-Khaliostani content in the regional Punjabi language and were attempting to create trouble in the border state of Punjab.
These videos will be blocked within 48 hours of the decision, said the IB official.
The official said that the government has also asked YouTube to use artificial intelligence and algorithms to identify and block objectionable content automatically.
These actions came in the wake of curbing Khalistani supporters in Punjab after Amrit Pal Singh and his supporters stormed into a police station in Ajnala with swords and guns in February.
Singh and his supporters took Lovepreet Singh Toofan, who was booked under charges of rioting and kidnapping. He was accompanied by Singh and twenty unidentified people in this case. An FIR for the same was registered on February 16.
All the accused allegedly kidnapped Barinder Singh from Ajnala and then beat him up. They are also accused of removing his turban and hurting his religious sentiments.
But after the rucksack, Lovepreet received a rousing welcome from the party members as he came out of the jail.
Amrit Pal Singh calls himself head of the separatist group’ Waris Punjab De’. The group was founded by actor and activist late Deep Sidhu, at an event held at Moga’s Rode, the native village of slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
Singh wanted the FIR to be quashed as he had proof of them being not guilty.
