An incident of vandalism of a Hindu temple has been reported in Darbhanga, Bihar. The Brahma Sthan temple, situated in Azam Nagar mohalla of the Vishwavidyalaya police station area, was allegedly vandalised by Mohammad Chand on January 11, 2023. Police arrested accused Mohammad Chand after protests by locals.

As per the information received, there is no gate in the temple. Taking this as an opportunity, Mohammad Chand allegedly broke the statue of King Shailesh and threw the idols of gods and goddesses into the pond. He also set the puja material into the fire.

Subsequently, local Hindus staged protests against the vandalisation of the temple. Police reached the spot and arrested the accused Mohammad Chand. Station House Officier (SHO) Satyaprakash Jha made an assurance that the guilty will be severely punished. Police also recovered the idols from the nearby ponds and kept it safely in the temple complex. According to the police, the gate of the temple was not built because there was a dispute over the way to the temple since 2017.

Vishva Hindu Parishad activists asked the district administration to limit the boundary of the temple and pond to settle the dispute and set up a temporary gate in the temple. Earlier, a report of vandalisation of a temple was reported in the Araria District in June 2022, when unidentified people vandalised an idol of a deity installed inside a temple and foisted a flag of a different religion as said by the Police.
