Shillong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a vital trip to Meghalaya capital Shillong and participated at the Golden Jubilee function of the North Eastern Council and attended an IIM function.

In his speeches, the Prime Minister highlighted various developmental steps taken by his government in last eight years.

Using soccer analogy in the ongoing football season, Modi asserted that in the last eight years, “we have shown ‘Red Card’ to the obstacles in way of development in the North East”.

Referring to landmark occasion of India hosting G-20 in 2023 as it’s President– a first such honour- the Prime Minister said, “We want to showcase the potential of North East infront of the entire world at G20 meetings”.

He also said the parties who were in power for a long time  divided  North East “and we have come up with the idea of removing the division. Be it different communities or different regions, we are removing all kinds of divisions.”

Shri Narendra Modi said the Govt is dedicated to developing ‘Vibrant Border Villages’. “Under this, we will enjoy better opportunities in border areas in terms of connectivity, education, healthcare and progress”. He said his government is spending over Rs 7 lakh crore for infrastructure building in North East. It was lower than Rs 2 Lakh crore eight years ago.

The Prime Minister also said, “we are moving forward with a new approach in the field of sports. North East has the first sports university of India. North East is also getting the gift of multipurpose halls, football grounds, athlete tracks with 90 such projects”.

Speaking at the NEC meet, Home Minister Amit Shah said the northeast has gone ahead on the path of development. Peace has prevailed in the northeast. “Earlier, a lot of demands were made to repeal AFSPA. Now, nobody needs to make demands, two steps ahead Govt is taking initiatives to repeal AFSPA”.

The Prime Minister is expected to address a meeting of BJP party workers at Shillong later in the day. BJP office bearers and leaders from Nagaland and other neighbouring states will also attend. Elections are in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland by Feb-March 2023. The Prime Minister will also visit Agartala and address a large meeting and also inaugurate developmental projects.
