Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thanked US President Joe Biden for his good wishes to India on assuming the presidency of G20. “Thank you @POTUS (President of US). Your valued support will be a source of strength for India’s G-20 Presidency. It is important we all work together to build a better planet,” the Prime Minister wrote in his tweet to Biden.

Modi’s message came in response to Biden’s remarks on the micro-blogging site. “India is a strong partner of the United States, and I look forward to supporting my friend Prime Minister Modi during India’s G20 presidency,” Mr Biden had tweeted on Dec 2.

The US President further wrote: “Together we will advance sustainable and inclusive growth while tackling shared challenges like the climate, energy, and food crises”. In a historic moment, India formally assumed the G-20 Presidency, from Indonesia, on Dec 1. today.

The G20, or Group of Twenty, is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s 20 major developed and developing economies, making it the premier forum for international economic cooperation. In a blog article penned on occasion, carried by publications across the world, the Prime Minister said that India looks forward to a Presidency of healing, harmony and hope.

According to an MEA statement, a key element of India’s G20 Presidency will be taking the forum closer to the public and making it truly a ‘People’s G20’. “To realize this, Citizen engagement and large scale public participation through various Jan Bhagidari activities are planned throughout the year,” it said.

Experts say India’s concerns about black money and tax avoidance will be taken on board at the G-20. It has also been stated that the G20 must “do everything in its power” to keep inflation within range and protect vulnerable people’s living standards. Moreover, the issues of climate financing, digital assets and capital flows are also likely to continue to feature in the G20 agenda.
