Bangladesh urges US to expedite deportation of Sheikh Mujib’s killer Rashed Chowdhury

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (1920-1975) is considered the Father of the Nation and the architect of independent Bangladesh. He was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army officials on August 15, 1975 along with most of his family members.

The Sheikh Hasina government in Dhaka has urged the United States to expedite the process of deportation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s killer Rashed Chowdhury to Bangladesh.

Junior Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shahriar Alam, in his meeting with the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R Sherman in Washington, told her that the issue was of utmost importance to the people of Bangladesh and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself.

Mr Alam also emphasised that an extradition treaty between Bangladesh and the USA should be concluded as early as possible.

Sherman and Alam discussed the US-Bangladesh partnership as the two countries commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Shariar Alam also urged the US government to withdraw sanctions against the elite law enforcement agency of Bangladesh Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and its senior officials as soon as possible.

He thanked the US for its generous support to Bangladesh by providing nearly 88 million Covid-19 vaccine doses and humanitarian aid to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. He expressed the willingness of the Bangladesh government to work more closely with the US on the issue of climate change and migration, said a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman, lauded the contribution of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in global peacekeeping.

She also appreciated Bangladesh’s leadership role in climate change and encouraged Bangladesh to join the Global Methane Pledge prior to COP27.

The US State Department in a press statement reaffirmed the importance of promoting human rights and holding free, fair and peaceful elections in Bangladesh.
