Guwahati: A total of 4449 families had been evicted from the government and forest land so far by the administration in Assam, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who is also in charge of the home department informed the Assam assembly on Monday. Replying to a written question put by suspended Congress MLA of Baghbar constituency Sherman Ali, Dr. Sharma informed the house that Out of 4,449 families, 2153 families have been evicted in Darrang district, 805 families in Hojai district, 404 families in Dhubri district, 321 families in Sonitpur district, 288 families in Tinsukia district, 127 families in Karimganj district, 90 families in Barpeta district, 81 families in Goalpara district. It should be mentioned that Assam government carried out the massive eviction drive in Dhalpur-Gorukhuti in Darrang district on 26 September 2021. The government successfully evicted more than 2000 illegal encroacher families and cleared almost 10000 acres of government land. Similarly on 8th November 2021, government evicted 800 illegal encroacher families from Lumding reserve forest in Hojai district.
In reply to another written question by MLA Sherman Ali, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the Assembly that a total of 116 Jihadis linked with several Islamic terrorist organisations have been arrested from different parts of the state in the last 10 years, including 42 this year. CM informed the Autumn session of Assam Legislative Assembly,
“Out of which 65 cadres are of JMB (Jamaat-UL-Mujahideen Bangladesh), 9 cadres are of HM (Hizbul Mujahideen) and 42 cadres are of ABT (Ansarullah Bangla Team), or Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS)
The Assam Chief Minister further said that, out of these 114 arrests, 23 cases were transferred to NIA for further investigation.
“In the case of Jamunamukh police station of 2018, out of the 9 arrestees, 5 have been charge-sheeted and the case is under trial. The two instances of Barpeta (transferred to NIA) where 14 persons were arrested are currently pending trial.
Out of the remaining 91 arrests, cases of 54 arrestees are still pending investigation and the rest 37 arrestees have been charge-sheeted and are under trial,” the Assam Chief Minister informed.
