New Delhi: Delhi Police on Tuesday said that it has provided security to Nupur Sharma after an FIR was registered on a complaint that she was getting death threats following her remarks about the life of Muhammad, the founder of Islam.

“Sharma and her family have been provided police security after she alleged that she has been receiving threats and was being harassed over her remarks,” an official said.

“:@CPDelhi I’m being bombarded with rape, death and beheading threats against my sister, mother, father & myself. I’ve communicated same to @DelhiPolice. If anything untoward happens to me or any of my family members…,” tweeted Nupur Sharma on May 27.

The Delhi Police has registered an FIR over complaints that former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma received death threats for making reference to the life of Muhammad, the founder of the Islam religion.

“Based on the FIR, we have initiated a probe into the matter,” a senior police official said. According to officials, the FIR has been registered under IPC sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence), 506 (criminal intimidation), 507 (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) against unknown people.

After the letter with her personal address was out in the media, Nupur Sharma issued a statement on Twitter where she asked the media houses to refrain from making her address public. “I request all media houses and everybody else not to make my address public. There is a security threat to my family,” said Nupur.

The BJP on Sunday suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her “views contrary to the party position on the various matter.”

Later Nupur Sharma, on Twitter, unconditionally withdrew her statement made in the TV debate and claimed that her comments were a reaction to “continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev(Lord Shiva).”
