Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Tuesday (May 10), awarded Assam police with the prestigious President’s colour. In a glittering function held in Guwahati, the Union Home Minister handed the President’s colour over to the Assam police on behalf of the President of India. Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, top police, BSF, ITBP, and Army officials were also present at the ceremony.

Union home minister Amit Shah was given a guard of honour by different wings of the Assam police, including the women commando group ” Veerangana”.

Assam police became the second state police of the North East after Tripura police to receive the prestigious President’s colour award. So far, ten Indian state police have received this distinguished award, including the Mumbai police.

Lauding the selfless services of Assam police, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Assam would be crime-free within the next four years. Mentioning the withdrawal of AFSPA from 23 districts of Assam, Home Minister Shah said peace and normalcy have come back to the state, and almost all the extremist organisations have returned to the mainstream.

Asking police to be friendly with the poor people, Shah said Assam police is succeeding in the war against drugs. So far, more than 4800 drug peddlers and 992 cow smugglers have been arrested by Assam police which is an unprecedented example of active policing, Shah said.

Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, AFSPA has been withdrawn partially from Assam, and soon it will be withdrawn from the entire state, Shah said, adding now we have given a ‘special power act of development’ to the youth of Assam. He also said CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is working to bring the remaining extremist groups to peace talks, and soon the issue of militancy will end in Assam.
