New Delhi: BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani had to ‘educate’ Congress leader and Maharashtra Minister for Women and Child Development Yashomati Thakur that “Nagaland is a part of India”.

The issue came to light on Tuesday, April 12, at the Zonal Conference of States and Union Territories and stakeholders of the Western region in Mumbai when Yashomati Thakur, Maharashtra Minister, said, “With some states and countries we do have an MoU but with the others, especially, children coming from Nagaland…woman coming from Nagaland.”

Union Minister Smriti Irani interrupted her by saying Nagaland is a part of India.

Yashomati Thakur, for a moment, sought to replace ‘Nagaland’ with ‘Thailand’, but again she said, “I know …It is our own country I understand, but there are children coming to the states and again ‘deported’ to the states without any notification. So Nagaland is also one of the states from where children come over here and we ‘deport’ them without any notification as we do not have an MoU.”

Ms Irani then shot back, saying as Nagaland is ‘within India’, nomenclatures like deportation are not to be used.

“You should be mindful of your words…this is my humble request”, the Union Minister said.
