Even after the Supreme Court had outlawed the practice of triple talaq and the Union government has passed a law making the practice of triple talaq a punishable offence, the practice of triple talaq is still being reported.

In one such incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, Mohammed Khalid Qureshi, 45, divorced his wife Zahida Bi, 42, on Wednesday (April 6) through triple talaq.

After uttering talaq thrice, Khalid threw his wife and two children out of the house. Zahida was married to Khalid 20 years back and has two sons aged 18 and 15.

Zahida alleged that Khalid, who is in meat business, has an affair with another woman. When she confronted him about his affair, he got furious and started abusing and threatening her. She got scared and told her family about Khalid’s affair. Intervening on behalf of Zahida, they tried to convince Khalid to stop torturing her.

On Wednesday (April 6), Khalid got furious and uttered talaq thrice and threw his family out of the house.

After all the efforts to save her marriage failed, Zahida reached police station and narrated her trauma. The police registered an FIR.

In a landmark judgment in August 2017, the Supreme Court had declared the practice of Triple Talaq unconstitutional. Following on it in August 2019, the Union government passed a law making the practice of triple talaq a criminal offence.

The Triple Talaq law has a provision of three-year imprisonment for any husband practising it. Still, a section is practising it.

In August 2020, Faiz Alam Ansari had divorced his wife in Bhopal through triple talaq on WhatsApp.

Taking cognisance of her case, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had said, “A Muslim sister in Bhopal lodged an FIR with police this morning regarding her divorce through triple talaq delivered through a message. I can assure the sister that MP police will take all possible steps to ensure justice to her.”

In November last year, Aas Mohammed Khan in Indore was booked for giving triple talaq to his wife over phone. “In her complaint filed on Saturday night, the woman alleged that her husband, Aas Mohammed Khan, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur, gave triple talaq to her over phone on September 21,” MIG Police Station in-charge Ajay Verma had said.
