New Delhi: They call it sparking a buzz. Some dismiss it as rumour mongering, but politics is also an art of possibility.

There is speculation over the future moves of Punjab MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, who was onetime considered close to Rahul Gandhi.

Bittu, sitting Congress MP from Ludhiana, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Monday (April 4). He tweeted the snaps of the cordial meeting and said the meeting was meant to discuss “issues of Punjab”.

Does it mean more than what sees the eyes? One source insisted that he is not joining the BJP “as of now”, but then why such a meeting and that during the busy ongoing Parliament session and Ukraine crisis?

Moreover, on all occasions, opposition MPs do not share the snaps on social media even if they meet the Prime Minister or the central ministers for parliamentary or constituency related works.

46-year-old Bittu has also been critical of Navjot Singh Sidhu and has been upset about denying him the party president’s post in Punjab.

In March 2021, he was briefly appointed as the ‘Congress leader’ in the Lok Sabha by Congress leadership when the incumbent Congress floor leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was “busy” in the West Bengal election campaigns.

Bittu was elected to the Lok Sabha from Ludhiana and earlier from Anandpur Sahib. He won the 2009, 2014 and 2019 general elections. He also is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, who was assassinated by Sikh militants.

In January 2021, he was assaulted at the Singhu border during a ‘Jan Sansad’ program.

The AAP recorded a landslide victory in the just-concluded Punjab elections, and the Congress could win only 18 seats, down from its tally of 77 seats in 2017.
