Patiala (Punjab): A video of a sacrilege attempt at Sri Kali Mandir surfaced on internet on Monday, in which a man identified as Rajdeep Singh jumped into the enclosure where Maa Kali’s Swaroop is installed. He reportedly attempted to deface the Swaroop.

The priest present in sanctum sanctorum and other devotees immediately overpowered him. Later, he has been handed over to the police.

According to CM Office, a sacrilege attempt was made at Shri Kali Devi Temple on Monday and the accused was restrained by devotees and security personnel at the spot. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi took to Twitter to inform about the alleged sacrilege incident.

"Today around 2.30 pm, a person arrived at Sri Kali Mata Mandir in Patiala and climbed on the threshold where the idol of Sri Kali Mata Ji was installed. Following this, he was caught and handed over to the police," Channi tweeted.

In protest against the incident, Hindu organisations have called for a bandh in Patiala on Tuesday. Punjab Lok Congress chief and former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh condemned the incident. He urged Election Commission to take stock of the incident and take strict action to ensure peace in the state. “Strongly condemn the disturbing incident of attempted sacrilege at Shri Kali Mata Mandir in Patiala. Repetitive attempts to disturb peace in Punjab will not be tolerated. I urge Election Commission to take strict action so that the atmosphere in the state is not disturbed,” Captain Amarinder Singh said.

Chief Minister Channi condemned the sacrilege attempt at Kali Devi Temple in Patiala and urged people to maintain peace and communal harmony in the state.

"Bad elements are attempting to create mayhem by disturbing hard-earned peace and harmony of Punjab ahead of the assembly elections in Punjab. I urge people to maintain peace and communal harmony in the state," said CM Channi.
