When the elections are around the corner, ticket aspirants go overboard to ensure they get a party ticket. But, can someone plan an attack on herself to get the attention of the party leadership?
This is what has happened in Uttar Pradesh. On January 3, Congress leader Rita Yadav was shot in the leg by unknown assailants. The Congress party used it to highlight the state's 'poor' law and order situation. Uttar Pradesh Police promptly registered an FIR and started investigating the matter. It has been revealed that Yadav planned the attack to get noticed by the party leadership.
The Congress party had earlier claimed that Yadav was shot because she had shown black flags to Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was visiting Uttar Pradesh. It had also alleged that Union Minister Smriti Irani was encouraging goons in the area. The police have now arrested Rita Yadav and her two accomplices, Musteek Ahmed and Dharmendra Yadav.
In October last year, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Vadra, in charge of Uttar Pradesh, announced that the Congress party would give 40% tickets in the assembly polls to women. She called it a move to empower women.
The Opposition has made multiple fake claims to create a narrative that the law & order in the state under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is poor.
Islamist Munawwar Rana's 28-year-old son Tabrez was attacked by assailants in June last year. Rana used the opportunity to attack Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The police investigation revealed that Tabrez had planned the attack himself to implicate his uncles in a property dispute. He also believed that the media attention would help him secure a party ticket for the assembly polls.
In June last year, Samajwadi Party leader Umed Pehlwan Idrisi had given a communal twist to a personal fight in Ghaziabad. He helped orchestrate and spread the rumour that Abdul Samad Saifi was thrashed for not chanting Jai Shri Ram. Police investigation revealed it was a personal fight, and those who thrashed Saifi were also Muslims.
On January 8, the Election Commission announced poll dates for the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Voting is spread over seven phases, starting February 7. The counting will take place on March 10.
