Imphal: IED triggered by terrorists killed one Assam Rifles personnel and injured another in Thoubal district of Manipur on Wednesday (January 5). Assam Rifles confirmed the martyrdom of the brave soldier in the terrorist attack, suspected to be carried out by the PREPAK group, which took place on Wednesday afternoon at around 2.30 pm.

Martyred Assam Rifles soldier Longdon Wangsu was from Arunachal Pradesh and was patrolling in the area along with his company near a water reservoir. Another Jawan Pingku Das, who hails from Tripura, was injured in the IED blast.

According to sources, the insurgent group PREPAK Pro was behind the blast.

Superintendent of Police of Thoubal district H Jogeshchandra told the media that the explosive device was found near the Sangomsang Water Supply Works reservoir where 16 Assam Rifles personnel were patrolling.

Assam Rifles and Manipur police jointly conducted a search operation in the area after the blast. This is the second such attack on security forces by a terrorist group in poll-bound Manipur since November. 8 AR personnel, including one Lt. Colonel, his wife and minor son, were killed in a terrorist ambush in November last year in Churachandpur district near the Myanmar border.
