Speaker Birla addressed the ongoing session of the Assam assembly. He said India is the mother of democracy and many countries look at India as an example of true democracy.
Guwahati: Parliament and assemblies should be the centre of discussion for people's aspirations, not a place for agitation. Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla said this in the Assam assembly on Friday (December 24). Speaking in the assembly as a special guest speaker Birla said our ideology, thinking process may differ, but the assembly should be united for the development of the state and its people.
Speaker Birla is the first Lok Sabha speaker who has visited the Assam assembly during an ongoing session and delivered his speech. Addressing the MLAs of the Assam assembly, speaker Birla said that India is the mother of democracy. We have had democracy in our tradition and culture from ancient times. There are different languages and diversity in India, but still, there is unity because of our democracy. Many countries look at India as an example of true democracy. He added that the smooth transfer of power through elections in India is the greatest example of a healthy democracy. Governments will come and go. But it is our duty to maintain the dignity of the assemblies. It should be a forum for constructive discussion for people's welfare. The speaker added that the way legislators are opposed in 'sadan' is not ideal, and houses should be the centre of discussions, not an epicentre of uproar.
Speaking on his maiden visit to the Assam assembly as a special guest, speaker Birla said that Assam is unique in every aspect, so is 'Asom' (unequal). It has emerged as a leading state of the country. He also mentioned great legislators of Assam like Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi, Dr Bhupen Hazarika in his speech. Speaker Birla also launched a portal of Assam assembly during his visit.
