Left-liberal historians, fiction writers and filmmakers hailed Akbar as a secular when Mughals were infamous for their religious intolerance.

New Delhi: Delhi BJP media cell chief Naveen Kumar Jindal has shot off a letter to NDMC to initiate the renaming process of the capital's famous Akbar Road after Gen Bipin Rawat.

He said it would be a fitting tribute to the man who led Indian armed forces and brought in the much-desired set of initial reforms in defence programmes and policies.

Several roads and railway stations have been renamed lately after the Narendra Modi led BJP government took over power in the centre, states, including Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Notably, Akbar Road also houses the Congress headquarters, and such a demand has certain potential to generate political debate.

24 Akbar Road is the address of the Congress headquarters, and some 'secular fanatics' even link such an address as the political approach of the Congress party – which for years now has also earned brickbats for its Muslim and perceived Christian appeasement policies.

Left-liberal historians, fiction writers and filmmakers have always glorified Mughal ruler Akbar. He is more often also hailed as a secular emperor in an era when Mughals were infamous for their religious intolerance. The capital's famous Aurangzeb Road was renamed after former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

Railway stations in Allahabad and a few other places like Mughal Sarai have been renamed. Faizabad district in Uttar Pradesh has been renamed the district of Ayodhya.
