In yet another case of Love Jihad in Uttar Pradesh, Fayeem Qureshi from Agra married Varsha and converted her to Zoya. Varsha was found dead in Fayeem’s house on Friday (November 12).

Varsha’s brother Dushyant said that on Friday (November 12) evening, Fayeem called him to inform that Varsha had committed suicide.

With his friend Shailu Pandit, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Dushyant rushed to Fayeem’s house.

“On the bed were kept four chairs. Three pillows were lying on top of the chairs. Despite this, the roof was quite far. There is no way my sister, who was four feet in height, could have reached the rope,” says Dushyant told Swarajya magazine.

Varsha’s body was lying on the floor.

After making the phone call, he added that Fayeem and his family members had run away from their house. Dushyant told the neighbours that he would take her body home and perform the last rites as per Hindu ritual.

The neighbours pelted stones on Dushyant and his friends.

“The residents began to object, saying we should wait for Fayeem’s family to return. Some even laughed at us. We told them we would be dragging the family to court for murder,” said Dushyant.

“Someone even shot in our direction; a bullet went right past me,” he added.

Fayeem and his brother Nayeem are automobile repair mechanics, and their father, Kayyum Qureshi, is an autorickshaw driver.

On the complaint of Dushyant, police have registered an FIR against Fayeem, Nayeem, Kayyum and Fayeem’s mother and sister under various sections of the IPC. Police have arrested Fayeem, Nayeem and Kayyum.

About a year and a half ago, Fayeem had married Varsha in a local court. The family got to know about their relationship after receiving a notice from the court informing them about Varsha’s marriage to Fayeem.

“I was shocked. I had no idea my sister was seeing someone, that too a man from outside the Hindu community,” Dushyant told Swarajya magazine.

Varsha’s sister Khushboo said, “Right from the beginning, she complained of ill-treatment at the hands of Fayeem’s family. There were too many cultural differences. While we don’t even use onion or garlic in the food, Varsha was made to clean and cook meat every day. She told us many times that she hated doing it.”

Fayeem’s family also taunted Varsha for coming ‘empty-handed’ to their house.

Varsha had also informed her family that a Maulvi used to visit their house to teach Varsha about Namaz, Islam and Islamic practices.

“Varsha said she tried her best, but it was too difficult for her. Any mistake from her side would end up in a thrashing by Fayeem,” Khushboo said. Fayeem’s family did not like Varsha keeping any contact with her family and so was not allowed to make any phone calls to her family.

“There were other issues too. She had no freedom, no space for herself. Fayeem never liked her talking to us. On many occasions, he snatched her phone. Varsha would secretly call us using someone else’s phone. So the calls were always short,” Khushboo said.
