Guwahati: After 75 years of India's independence, the North-East region gets its first electric train on Friday (October 22). In another milestone for Indian Railways, the first passenger train pulled by an electric locomotive arrived at the Kamakhya Railway Station in Guwahati on Friday (October 22).
Northeast Frontier Railway tweeted, "Brahmaputra Mail today became the 1st passenger train @RailMinIndia reaching NE completing its journey from Delhi to Kamakhya of more than 2000 kms through electrified territory. DN Brahmaputra Mail also left Kamakhya for Delhi with electric traction. Thus, starting a new era."
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Railways had informed that the NFR has successfully completed the electrification work of a total of 649 Route Kilometer (RKM)/ 1294 Tonne Kilometer (TKM) of the High-Density Network (HDN) from Katihar to Guwahati.
On Thursday (October 21), the first electric locomotive goods train arrived in the Kamakhya station near Guwahati. NR railway informed that the electrification works of rail tracks up to Dibrugarh is in progress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a vision to connect all the state capitals of the North East through rail connectivity. The railway ministry is working on connecting all states of the NE through railway connectivity by 2024. The initiative to run electric engines to Guwahati is a part of the mega vision of prime minister Narendra Modi.
