The ministry formed a 12-member panel to revise the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) serves as a guideline for syllabus, textbooks, teaching and learning practices in the country.

The Union Education Ministry formed a 12-member National Steering Committee to develop the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Renowned Indian space scientist and former head of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Dr. K Kasturirangan will head the panel.

Dr. Kasturirangan was also the head of the drafting committee of NEP 2020.

In a statement, the Union Education Ministry said the panel would develop four curriculum frameworks: a national curriculum framework for school education; a national curriculum for early childhood care and education; a national curriculum framework for teacher education; and a national curriculum framework for adult education.

“The Committee will discuss different aspects of these four areas, keeping in focus of all the recommendations of NEP 2020 for proposing curriculum reforms… All the national curriculum frameworks would also reflect upon the implications of situations such as COVID-19 pandemic on respective areas for the future,” the statement noted.

Currently, the fourth National Curriculum Framework finalised in 2005 is in place in the country.

The members of the panel include Chancellor of National Institute of Education Planning and Administration, Mahesh Chandra Pant; Chairman of National Book Trust, Govind Prasad Sharma; Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia Najma Akhtar; Vice-Chancellor of Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh T V Kattimani; Chairperson of IIM Jammu Milind Kamble and guest professor at IIT Gandhinagar Michel Danino.

Other members are Jagbir Singh, Chancellor of the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda; Manjul Bhargava, American mathematician of Indian origin; M K Sridhar, trainer and social activist; Dhir Jhingran, founder-director of Language and Learning Foundation (LLF); and Shankar Maruwada, co-founder and CEO of EkStep Foundation.

The tenure of the panel is three years.

The ministry said the new framework and curriculum would be developed after consulting all the stakeholders in the states and union territories.
