Guwahati: The influx from neighbouring Myanmar to India continues. The fresh influx of refugees from the military coup that hit Myanmar has crossed the 2000 mark. As per government data, a total of 2266 Myanmar nationals have entered Mizoram between Friday and Tuesday. Police and district officials sources said that the fresh immigrants, including women and children, are taking shelter in 15 to 16 villages in three districts of the state, namely, Champhai, Lawngtlai and Hnah-thial bordering Myanmar.

On Tuesday (September 14), almost 350 people crossed the border and entered Mizoram triggered by the military offensive in the neighbouring country, official sources said.

State police said that almost 12000 Myanmar nationals are currently taking shelter in Mizoram.

Out of the total number, 278 refugees had come into Champhai district, 1,268 refugees had entered Hnahthial district, and 720 refugees are taking shelter in Thingsai, official sources said.

Meanwhile, in Hnahthial, the Young Mizo Association or YMA and other civil society groups are helping the refugees on humanitarian grounds.

Six Mizoram districts–Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Serchhip, Hnahthial and Saitual- share a 510 km-long international border with Myanmar’s Chin province. Most of the people who entered the Indian territory are from the Chin province.

After the military coup on February 1 in Myanmar, thousands of people had fled to Mizoram, including politicians, ministers, and MPs from the Chin province.

Recently, Assam police had arrested 26 Myanmar nationals in Guwahati. This group was on their way to the national capital Delhi to study on Bibel with fake documents, including Indian Aadhar card, Voter ID and college ID. Assam Police is investigating the case.
